home depot valve VS. external scupper

i know this subject has probably been beat to death. lookin for advice on a scupper set up. what is the best thing to use, the home depot one way valve or a scupper. i'm gonna be pump dumping the scupper if that makes any difference. also what size one way valve to use if that is the way to go.

The zoeller one way valve from Graiger is about $14-16 dollars.Add a 2 foot pvc pipe and you have less than $25 in the whole thing. Now go price a scupper.Works just as good.

I think I'm going this route too, looking at what to use for the through hull fititngs in the back of the hull and bulkhead, I'm thinking of trying to find a 2 inch plastic drain flange for the fittings since it has a large rubber gasket, but it will be sometime before I can get to a hardware store.

I have made the descision to also do a refoam/re-enforcement too (bottles, pingpong balls,???) Yea... I'm really taking the high road on this one, lol.

I did a search a few days ago and I feel better with a one way valve.

2" valve glued to a 2" pipe.
I didn't want to use those rubber couplings that come with the valve as I didn't like the idea of having hose clamps under my tray.

I use both, but it's overkill. A scupper by itself is not as reliable as a one way valve by itself. If I was pump dumping then I'd go with just the one way valve. If you were gonna exit the rear of the ski (like I did) then I'd go with scupper for aesthetics. The extra price is worthless in terms of the intended performance.

And mount the one way as close to the bulkhead as possible this way if you don't have a scupper. But even a leaky old scupper is more than enough to protect the one way valve. make sure you use the home depot valve thats one piece, not the 2 piece valve from lowes which leaks like a sieve.

I say run both...my old 24-7 scupper didn't leak one drop.

with my new pump dump scupper water just pours in. My boat will SINK in 5 minutes...Glad I have an 1100gph bilge pump.....I might just have to put a plug in the scupper tube. I can't get the damn thing to stop pouring in water.

You got a bolt or small hose clamp stuck in it or something?

its probably leaking cuz all the rattling coming out of your ski is your engine bolts rattling down your scupper tube. :hitwithrock:

Hey Smurf...Been running a 1.5" home depot valve in my X2 for about 3 years now. Works awesome. I'm building a SJ now and have a X-Metal scupper. Doesn't look like it'll close as well as the home depot valve. Thinking of using a 2" sump pump valve as well as the scupper. The scupper looks cool on the back of the shki...That's all. No matter what you choose it's all good!

I put the home depot one in without tray cut .

via Boris instructions ( great help ) I opened-cut a 3"+ hole in the bulkhead and inserted the home depot one way valve, then assembled the scupper in the back, foamed it all and sealed it with 403/404 filler, very clean !!

No tray cut
