house fire

My house burned Friday night at about 7pm. We were out of town sightseeing in Atlanta during my daughter's spring break. My wife's 23yo son was home and either left something on in the kitchen or it may have been electrical. investigators will be here this week I think.

I have good insurance and everybody, including the family dog, is ok. All the clothes that were in the dressers smell horrible.

Wow - so sorry to hear that. It's one thing to be insured, but you lose so much personal stuff it's hard to get everything back the way it was. Glad everyone is OK.

Sorry to hear that Andy, if you need anything just let us know. My Aunt and Uncle just lost their house 3 weeks ago to a chimney fire.

I have rewired many a burned house and often feel that it would have been better if it all burned and you can just start fresh.

The loss of personal items is probably the worst.Stuff that has so much sentimental value that could not be replaced at any cost.l don't know you but l hate that it happened.

I’m very sorry. I hope they do not determine it was owner neglect. My house fire (happened on my honeymoon…twas an omen) did quite a bit of smoke damage (exterior bedroom wall was axed down as well), and insurance paid for all of the clothes to be professionally cleaned (that smell will come out of your clothes). They put us up in a hotel in the interim, and it was all fairly disruptive. Even with that help, it took close to four months for life to return to normal, so I hope all goes smoothly for you, and you are back in your home quickly.

Thanks for the kindness of friends on here!!!
I don't really need andthing, just wanted to post up the 'carnage' pics.
There's some things that will be cleaned & saved, but a lot was lost. I still have clothes for my back and shoes. I am glad I found my keys for the vehicles we had at home. They were charred and dug out of the crud on the kitchen floor. I come out looking like a coal miner evertime I go over there.

Luckily, the SJ and all my tools are in a detached garage. I told the adjustor the garage was my house and the home was the wife's. I would be REALLY upset if it had spread to my garage and the other vehicles.

Although, I may have had a stroker motor, mag pump, & full spec carbs sitting on the kitchen counter...........hmmmm. :newangel: j/k

I asked the dwelling adjustor to give me two options, repair/rebuilding and taking a payoff. I did not like that neighborhood anyway.

Let this be a lesson to everyone, MAKE A LIST OF ALL OF YOUR PERSONAL PROPERTY!!!

You gave me nightmares Andy! The night I read that thread I dreamt that our house burned down and that all we had left were the cloths were were wearing and our dogs!

One tip our insurance guy told us was to simply walk around the house with a video camera and dictate an inventory of what you see, paying particular attention to high value items. It's very easy to do and can be a huge help becasue you not only have an inventory but physical evidence to give the adjuster.

then make sure you don't keep the camera in the house.

As an insurance agent for the last 10 years I have given that same reccomendation many times to our customers. But, I needed to take my own advise.
I spent yesterday monring from 7:30am - 2:30pm going through room by room. I heard the same question 100's of times: how much did you pay for this, how old is it? He filled out about 60 pages or so of stuff they can't save.

It's amazing how much stuff you find out you have when something like this happens. We had a car broken into and they took a couple of bags and my mountain biking backpack. We were blown away when we inventoried everything and realized how much value was in those bags!
