Anyone else use House of Kolor paint / flake? I used a black base coat over the whole ski, then cleared/flaked out the top deck with HOK Intense Red Holographic flake. Heres what my superjet looks like (still a work in progress)..

Is this your first paint job on a ski?, I'm really considering trying to paint mine, but I have no experience, yours looks really nice in pics but probably looks way better in person.

My buddy who has a shop here in Houston let me come in and use his booth; outside of helping with the sanding and priming, I took a stab at it during the clearing process, which is when you spray the flake, but it was predominantely him. Thanks for the compliment.

love it.

can you explain what coats you used and in what order?

i.e. what primer, what base, what flake, what clear, etc.

1) Sanded
2) primed
3) mercedes gloss black base (paint code - 040)
4) Cleared w/ flake

3 coats of clear:
4 parts clear to 1 part hardener with
HOK Kustom Shop Intense Red Holographic flake - 2oz Standard (8 parts) http://www.tcpglobal.com/kustomshop/kusf39.aspx
HOK Kustom Shop Chrome Silver flake - 1/4oz Micro (1 part) http://www.tcpglobal.com/kustomshop/kusf1.aspx

Sorry i dont have the specifics on the brand of clear and primer, my memory fails me

I have the house of kolor hot yellow on my ski. It was painted as a tri coat. primer , paint (yellow), then what was called a dew which had flakes in it , then cleared the whole ski after.

came out pretty killer.

I like the bass boat look. I've sprayed a few cars w/ flake, but not as heavy. I like to mix it into the balancer/binder vs. in the clear, it allows the flake to "stand" vs. it all laying down, so it has a lot of sparkle from different angles. HOK paint rocks! It's inexpensive and sprays easy. Sweet ski!

ya no way would i shoot flake like that through the Satajet 3000 I have...

hmmm i am wondering if shooting HOK Tangelo Pearl, or using Tangelo Flake and clearing would be a better way to go...

You can use a regular Satajet to spray flake... thats what I've used for years. Trick is not to fill your cup to the top so you can continuously "swirl" the mixture in the gun to prevent the flakes from settling, then dump the mixture out and lay your gun on its side between coats.

As far as mixing the flake in the binder or "clear basecoat" (PPG DBC 500 color blender)... I would strongly advise against this method on a ski. I have used this method in the past and although it is MUCH easier, it brings a hole new world of adhesion issues to the table. Objects that are NOT used and abused take to this method well, but not skis. Get one little scratch and the force of the water will peel that paint job like a potato!!! Trust me...

BTW JP- The ski looks KILLER!!! Nice job.

I hate painting skis but I used their stuff on my last ski. Awesome product and very friendly people to deal with IMO.

SoulMan turned me on to them...He used it for his ski...It's a great work of art...He put many, many hours into 'son of gus'

I just picked up another ski and will probably change the color but I am leaning towards a tinted gel coat from Valspar although I don't know much about gelcoats...trying to learn though...

The paint is good stuff though...Worth the price for the quality

Looks saweeet!! i'm trying to get my ski ready to shoot some metallic PPG on, but ive shot some of it already on little parts and i gotta say your color is really deep, good work.
