How bad is this?

Hey all,

I'm looking to get into stand up skis. I use to race MX back in my teens years and always wanted a ski, but it was never in the cards. Now that my MX career is long over and I have some expendable income, I'm finally going to pull the trigger on a ski.

I've never ridden a stand up before and I want to make sure I don't hate it before I drop some major coin on one. There doesn't seem to be many used skis in the Dallas area, but I came across this one.

It's a 1998 Kawasaki SXi Pro. It seems to be in good running order, but the hull has seen better days. The gelcoat looks pretty chewed up.

Is this something that should be fixed? Is it worth fixing? Is fixing it expensive?

That is normal for Kawi's the Gelcoat is brittle. You could patch with a gelcoat repair kit or Marine Tex. Have you also considered a Superjet?

Thank you! I would love a Superjet! However, I can't seems to find any used ones around my area, and I would like to make sure that I enjoy it before I commit to buying a brand new one.

You've never rode a ski before so you can buy anything and you will have fun for a while but if you want to save yourself some money in the long run and A LOT of time it's in your best interest to find a superjet even if you have to travel. It's common to see none for sale locally.

I have 2 SN superjets. The first one i traveled 2 states away to pick up. The second was 10 minutes away from my house.

I had to go to another country to get my SJ. And I'd do it again in a heartbeat. My SXIPro was fun and stuff but it was never the "I can't freakin' wait to get home to ride it" deal like my SJ is.

I hate to say it but keep any eye out for a stock ish sj. If you end up not liking to ski it will be easy to sell. If you do end up enjoying the ski, it's a great platform to build on.

I would ride that ski just the way it is and not worry about it.

Seems like used stand up skis in decent shape can usually be bought then sold with minimal loss, so I would say if you can't find a superjet, get what you can get and o ride. Upgrade if you want when you have the opportunity.

the pro is a great ski.carves very well and is just as fast as an sxr800.
with the right mods,it can be a nice surf boat too.not as nice as a sj but fun nevertheless.

Nothing to crazy. I don't see myself doing any crazy stunts or jumps. Mostly just cruising around on the lake with some buddies.

I don't do any crazy stunts or jumps either. I literally just ride really hard. I ride the sloppy freshwater surf when we get it, I carve on flatwater pinned wide open with an ass cheek in the water as a sponson, ill slalom surf yahct wakes as long as i can if they wave me on. Half the time I'm swimming.

Sometimes i just cruise the water line and site see.

But If you want to do any of that at all consider finding a superjet.

As an x MX’r that took up racing jetskis. I’ve owned them all. Nothing beats a superjet.

you just described the SXi Pro!!!!!!!!! It does all of those. What they are not great for is old school Flatwater Freestyle!

If you're just getting into the sport, I would start with something closer to stock. Whether it's an SJ, SXI, or my favorite the SXR. You're going to have a lot more fun just getting on the water and riding without wrenching. Add mods later, learn to ski now.

I'm fixing rash like that on my SXR this week. Using WHITE Marine TEX.

If you're really looking for a cheap ski to just go banging on, check out a 650SX. Some guys just love them, me not so much.

I'd disagree. If the 650SX was my first ski, I would have stuck with fishing as my primary water sport. I just do not enjoy them at all. I liked the SXIPro right off the bat, especially after I conquered the porpoising. The SJ though hooked me for life.

I think some people get too hung up on the whole superjet thing. Yes, if you have the money and can find one then the superjet is a great ski but to just tell someone new to the sport that they should get a superjet or nothing is crazy.

I had so many fun summers on my 650 SX then a SXI Pro and now I have graduated to a superjet but I would never trade those first skis for nothing as a superjet was out of my budget.

If it is all you have ridden and is all you can afford then go for it as the SXI Pro is a very fun and stable ski for ripping around on.

Hell, a 440 or even a 300 is better than nothing in my opinion, not ideal but better than sitting on shore watching your summer go by.

We all have our tastes. Out of all the skis I've ridden the 650 is the only ski that I really didn't like at all. Maybe it's because I only rode it for 30 minutes but it felt like riding on a piece of flat plywood.

If the OP is just looking to cruise an SXR might be a great option if within budget. I love superjets but stock vs stock for cruising I'd say an sxr hands down. But again, that's just my preference!
