How do you lock your ski?

If i have to lock mine down i will use the lock i use for my snowmobile when i am in michigan's UP. It is a motorcycle lock with a 3/8" hardened steel core and a drill proof lock. Will most likely lock it down by the grate.

I agree with all the others, if they want it bad enough... It is gone. I stress out about my skis for this reason from time to time.

A cable around the drive shaft is the only thing I can really think of. I did see these bow pin locks but heck they could just unbolt the bow pin holder from my trailer a lot easier then fooling with those locks. I have a lock on my trailer hitch coupler but thta is about it for me.

Years ago I did buy this lock that goes around the start/stop switch and has a place for a pad lock. Pretty niffty device. But... again, it someone wanted the ski, they could just take it and cut that lock off later with a torch. I never use it...

Best bet is to buy insurance and insurane for what it is worth to you!
good luck getting an insurance company to insure your ski for what you tell them it's worth.

I'm going to be making a lock for my trailer soon, the picture is pretty self explanatory but the bow eye fits between the two plates and a large pin goes though the bow eye....then a lock goes on the end of the pin.....seems to me like the most secure solution.

you never heard of a cordless sawzall?

if they don't cut the bolt, they only have to cut the steel plate or the square tubing. I've seen blades that would do it in seconds flat.

I used to be a manager of a bike shop some years ago, and everybody and there brother was making "theft proof" lock with rediculous claims. insuring bikes up to 5k and what not. one slow saturday we decided to conduct our own tests and went and grabbed on of every lock we carried and went to work.. the longest it took on any loch was 20 seconds and that was some big a$$ U loch and we smacked it with a regular carpenters hammer. the fastest was 7 second on a supposedly "cut resistant" braided cable. we cut through it with a pair of F-ed up wire cutters that we used for a a door stop because the blade resembled a steak knife.

moral of the story....nothing is "theft proof"

Cable over the driveshaft and receiver & hitch pin locks are really all you can do..... everything else is a waste of $ IMO.

If I do venture anywhere and worried someone might try something, I make sure to park in hard to access spots so they have to do a lot of lifting. Like end curb parking spots with the tires up against the side and back curb or parking block. This way they're going to have to carry a ski vs. easily wheeling the trailer up to their truck after cutting a lock.

I didn't have any trouble getting State Farm to insure for declared value(WAY above book value). I provide pics/receipts for everything and pay the premium. Don't remember what it costs, but I remember thinking it was pretty cheap. It's probably easier if you have house, life, cars, etc. with the same company.

ya i never thought of that with a jet ski trailer...I do that as much as I can with my car in Detroit every day. anything that minimizes risk of YOUR thing getting jacked - make the theif go to the car parked next to you.

ya same here... some times i gotta store it outside..... i can only hope to deter..

i have a lock on the ski thru the intake and i also lock the trailer wheel stragtically so you cant see the cable.. i stick thru the rim holes so if you were drive off with the trailer, the wheel would lock up in the event it would create a racket..

i also cover it with a tarp / distorting the shape , with the idea of concealing what it is to casual passerby.

yes i know, im anal....

I use two cable locks. One thew the pole bracket to the u hook in the back of my truck, this is the decoy lock. Then I have the :261: lock from the drive shaft right to the bed of the truck, it cant be seen unless you flip the ski sideways. They can still steal it just would not be easy and maybe take more time then they want to spend.
