How many surf riders have a surfing background?

25 years on a board. I have been riding long boards only for the past 15 years. My surf partner for the last 18 years likes to ride on the inside. I like big outside set waves. Funny watching some of the cats at pismo first time in the ocean.....First rule "never turn your back on the ocean or you will get pounded".

42 years on and off surfing, yes it helps with surf riding but I saw guys rip at Pismo that never surfed ,I have 2.5 years with skis over 10% of time in the water was a dream week in California Oside,Ventura,Pismo I am still having dreams of that week and the locals said it was just average at best, can't wait to make it for some epic days there !
You can learn a lot by watching the waves and putting yourself in different spots , it is like cheating or is cheating on a ski as you can get out of the danger zone so easy but of course the fun thing to do is throw yourself in the pit and see what happens .

I wished I surfed before I jetski'd. I actually bought a long board about 8 years ago to try to get some more wave knowledge, but I've only been on it about a dozen times.

Went out for 2 weekend trips getting stoked on life to be able to have the opportunity to paddle my way up to speed to catch a wave on a 8 foot sponge board and ride it all the way in when I was 11 and 12. From there I never did jack but body board if I ever when to the beach. Its pretty safe to say thanks to watching and riding with fellow pros and Scott Watkins video over and over and over and over again I've developed my surf background from Freeriding.

This is the vid im talking about

I surfed 1983-1989. I never got really good at it. But the experience has helped for sure in surf riding.

It's 1000x harder to get good at surfing as it is jetskiing..with jetskis u can practice the same thing over and over..that's why I like waveriding cause I can do all the things I can't do surfing even though I've been doing it for most of my life..plus it dosnt matter if the waves are as good for jetskiing. I can surf fairly descent when the waves are perfect and sizeable but I'm not as good when the waves are weak although it's easier to do stuff on a ski when it's powerful too just takes more commitment

I'm a bit confused about what you're calling surf-riding and jet skiing! lol. I learned to surf in Huntington Beach, CA shortly b4 joining the navy, surfed San Diego (point loma etc..) b4 getting stationed in Hawaii. Much of the surf was a bit much for me there.
Xfered back to San Diego...(way out of shape) surfed a few times at PB.

My point was that even though I never was a really good surfer, The experience has helped a lot with the jet ski surf riding.

Agreed a 1000% The reason surfing is so hard to get good at is because while surfing, 95% of the time you're NOT actually surfing, you're either paddling or sitting and waiting for the next set of waves

One of the things that is great about surfing is that it is hard to learn. Keeps alot of the lops outta da wata.
