I've never really been that much into school sports (basketball, football, soccer, baseball, etc), so I was always more interested in motorsports, and the past few years I've gotten into snowboarding.
I've ridden atv's & snowmobiles since around five years old ( suzuki trailbuddy 3 wheeler, kitty kat snowmobile, good times) Been on couches many times beforehand, but never owned one till over a year ago. Got pretty bored with it fast though.
Don't really get that much time to ride atvs/snowmobiles anymore though, as good snowmobile trails are 5 hours away, and we rarely get out the atv's twice a year. I get tons of ride time on my ski though.

Anyways, I think a more direct comparison to skis is other motorsports. I don't know about you guys but compared to quads, bikes, snowmobiles, I love standups a million times more. There's something about them that's so completely addicting. Maybe it's that you don't as easily get hurt on them, and you're always progressing. I'd sure as heck never try a backie on a dirtbike, but I would be much more willing to try one on a ski. I'd say they're much safer than dirt..
I don't think I'll ever get bored with them IMO. I've never really been into modding stuff, but I've got no problem spending hours and hours of work on my ski.Even though sometimes it really pisses me off ; It's completely worth it. I've never loved a sport as much as this one, and it's seriously something that just takes my mind off of everything when I'm riding. Well, and I think about it pretty much 24/7. I would have to say hands down that this site has definitely made the sport much more appealing to me, and the community we have here is awesome. I can't believe I survived so long without knowing about standups!
I've only been into standups for a little more than a year, and I think I'm hooked for life. I'm straightup addicted!

There, I've confessed my addiction!

How about you guys? How much do you love skis, and what's your story?

Watersports are addicting. The only thing that can compare to riding standups is getting bit by the surfing bug. I came from surfing ( lived by the ocean during college). Now I'm in the mountains and still love the water so I get my fix by riding skis in the rivers/rapids. Still hoping to make it back to the ocean to settle down. Freeriding and surfing= happy life.

I love skis so much that I got my girlfriend of 4 years hooked on them too. She used to think they were stupid. lol. Now jet skis are all we ever talk about. I'm sure we are referred to as that weird jet ski couple. Anyway we have an awesome time riding. There are usually no bad days of riding, unless you blow up a motor. My girlfriend Brandi actually has an account on here and on pwc today. She is a really good photographer and has sent many pictures in to pro rider and other magazines.
We also decided to name our next dogs riva (girl dog) novi (boy dog). . . I think you can say we are addicted.
Since I got in the sport in 2010 I have owned 31 skis, most of them are for parts but that's still a lot.
This year I started racing and competing in other events, not I'm more hooked than ever. Next year I'll be moving for college and I'm determined to take my ski or skis with me. Think I can sneak one in the dorm? I'm thinking I'll have to get a house or a storage unit. lol
I'm sure there are others that are even more addicted. . . we might have to sign up for jet skiers anonymous.

yea im hooked, i grew up with one passion which was salt water fishing i would be so keen i would scale cliffs to get to a rock ledge 2 hours walk with heavy gear.,then came the 16ft boat out in 3mtr seas lol i still have the boat but have all but given fishing up so i can ski as much as i can........long live jetski :1244:

First time I rode one a year and a half ago I hated it...it was a rough day on the lake and I swallowed so much water and my ear was totally plugged. I told my friend I didn't know how he rode those stupid things. About 6 months later I bought one for kicks.

NOW it's all I think about, all I devote my time to, and spend all my extra money on. I have a dirtbike and enjoy that too, but if it came down to one or the other the bike would without question go. To me it gives me the opportunity to be where I love to be (at the lake) and ride something similar to a dirtbike at the lake. Only, it doesn't hurt as bad when you fall.

I'm hooked for sure, don't think it'll ever get old. I'll probably be riding these things until my age or health prevents me to!

I've been riding for 30 years and I still feel the same buzz from riding and the addition just keeps getting stronger! I still feel I'm in "learning mode" every time I ride.

I'm so glad the sport still thrives........I had my doubts several years ago.

I would have to say Im hooked for life. It all started about 10 years ago now that i picked up a fully modded out js550 with almost every upgrade i could get. Before i know it i'm trying to find places to store my 12 stand up skis all but to go riding with some people i met on here and end up with an additional 6 blasters. I have sized my fleet down to 5 (bought a house) but all my time and spare cash goes to skis. All vacations i take are planned around jetskis and finding a way to get them from point A to point B.

Bought a js550 for $250 3 years ago because it seemed interesting, I remember getting off of it after the first ride and saying to my buddy "Dude that is the most fun I have ever had, this $hit is awesome!" Well that ski blew up 5 minutes later lol. Since then I've owned probably 25 different stand-ups. I now have a rickter fs2 which really is my perfect ski so hopefully I don't have to spend any money for awhile. It's the most addicting thing ever.

My home away from home.
Love them a lot and am so thankful to some dude here on the x that told me that if I liked freestyle to get here. That sentence was crap, but you get the point.

Anyways, it's been only 4 years, but I see myself sticking with it due to the water, the ever changing riding conditions, the never learning enough and the fun of it all. And one of the biggest parts of it is the jet ski community in general and my family. We all love it. I've met and have got to hang with some really fun and cool people. And as an added bonus we get to enjoy the water and everything about it.

I can't wait to learn to surf too. The ocean isn't too super far away from here. Wake surfing is fun, but watching the real thing…

Yah… I'm addicted for life and have no regrets.

Thats funny, i bought a js550 for about $200 too, had to put new plugs and gas in. Took it to the lake and ran it till i was tired, when i saw you mention first 550 i was just thinking why didn't my ski give me any problems ha? the only ski i never put a wrench too, why the heck did i sell it haha. I would have never gotten into the sport if my ski blew up like yours tho. And im sure you can't complain at all since your on a rickter:headbang:

Grew up riding ATVs and I still love those also but finding trails where you're allowed to be is tough these days in my area.

We have a lot of water here so riding a ski is easy to do if even for just a short run. I wish modifying them wasn't so expensive, but it's certainly rewarding. Having a small machine you're in control of and going places where only watercraft can go is awesome. As Roseand said, you don't have to worry about smacking into a tree or getting your head pulled off by a vine, etc.

Yes sir, this sport is THE sport. I have lived through most of them and this is the only one I stayed with. My sentiments are exactly the same as yours, I just put a B-pipe back together on a friend's ski and winterized it last night...it was one of those zen nights ya know? Of the last 3 weeks, last night's wrenching session made my life happy again. Until the spring comes around I will be going nuts for waiting to get back on my ski. It is pretty well my 24-7 addiction too. I had to ask the same question back a little while ago lol.

Sounds like I'm not alone!:arms:
Not many people understand my love for the sport though, unfortunately. Nobody I really know rides skis, including my family/cousins. None of them have taken the opportunity to take my ski for a spin! Once you take a spin, you'll be hooked.. That's what I tell them. Then they'll understand why I talk about it so much. My family & friends are pretty tolerant of me and my ski addiction now, probably because they know I'm so hooked on it and that it's not an addiction that's going to go away:love:. It's not like I talk about them all the time, but it's rare that I don't talk about them every couple of days. But I'm always spending time on the x..:sneaky:

Bump for a good winter thread!

+1

We are all in the same boat as you brother...or on the same boat...whichever boat you want to go with lol. Only us, the ski addicts, understand...which is why we are all here on the X with you  I tell people about getting out on the water and what it's like, I offer up my other ski all the time but rarely ever get any takers. Just like you, I tell them they only need to get out once and they will forever kick themselves for not getting a ski a long time ago. The sad part is, they never believe us, but strangely will never take us up on the offer :scratchchin:...probably because they know they will get addicted too and don't want to face the truth
