How much of a difference is a mag pump?

Hey guys, I've built a handful of skis so far, all with jetmanic motors for surf, stock pumps and hooker props. I've never run a 144-148 mag pump, with just a basic ported/head 701 type motor/144 w/hooker, would you see much difference running a 144-148 mag pump? Thanks Frank.

White wash in surf hell yeah it makes a difference.

Everywhere else. Not so much. Maybe if your chasing combos or doubles or trying to get every last millimeter of height out of your tricks. But if your not going 155-160 and super blinged out over priced pumps for 4000 bucks. Stick with stock oem imo. Getting the pump combo dialed is more critical than adding stator veins imo.

I agree with ^ on dialing in and in surf riding a mag makes a massive difference.

I personally can tell the difference on a oem 144 and a skat mag 144, a 148 is a whole different animal from a 144. Both 144mag and 148 mag used go semi cheap.
It’s worth it. You could probably pick up a 144 mag for like 2-300 used right now. Or go to a 148 for when you decide you’re ready for more POWAAA

The one I'm looking at is the skat trak mag standard 144mm. It is complete with hooker 9/15 and rrp trim, The gentlemen values it at 2k.

A mag pump also gives any hull straight line stability at wfo or higher speeds. My pos hurricane with a mag tracks straighter while chasing boats than my xfs with a stock 144. Also the prop dont spin in whitewash water full of air. No power differences but definitely some nice advantages if needed.

144 mag complete in good shape - 3-500 (one on Facebook right now btw)
Used 9/15- what 150-250 these days?
rrp trim system used - 350-500
Wouldn’t even consider 2k but that’s just me homie
Appreciate the advice man! I felt it was high, but haven't built a ski in a couple years and I'm not real sharp on the current market.

I have a Solas 144 mag with a new shaft and a 915 on it. I'd take prob 1000 for it. Bidenflation and the lack of availability has prices sky high. While 2k might seem steep. How much is a season without a mag pump worth

I still remember my 2 buddies riding my 701 evo at shasta, saying it had more bottom end than their Dasa 1000 edges.

Take it all with a grain of salt and do a bit of your own experimenting.

Mine is brand new. And has been cleaned in the bearing area to forego the bearing eating problem they are known for. But good deal on used parts

Keep in mind a legit skat mag usually goes for a little more than a solas "mag". Couldn't tell you anything about performance but the skat is lighter, the solas is solid stainless so no worries about corrosion of the aluminum housing.

So considering its a skat, with rrp trim and hooker prop, is 2k a reasonable price?

I have a 144mm skat with one of the "brap brap" props. It does make a difference. you get control in the nasty whites and more control at high speed. Now keep in mind I'm on a 91 superjet hull and ride fast as possible...two handfuls of times a year. Is it worth 2k? I would say he'll no.
