How old are some of the little kids that race or ride??

I noticed at Worlds there were some very small children riding. I want to get my two daughters on skies as soon as possible. My oldest is 5 now and can drive a car decent (not the pedals) so I was wondering how soon I could get her started on a stand up ski, and what ski would be best. I ride a blaster and sxr 1100 so those won't work. 440?550?

OP- Probably gonna need to find a private body of water or you may risk stiff penalties if you are indeed in CA. 16 and a automobile license was required last I checked. Good luck and have fun.

My son started at 12. Rode an SXR first 2 years. Now he has a Superjet. You need to be 16 here in MD to ride a pwc. Well he got I mean I got a ticket last year because he was under age. 80 bucks. DNR was watching us and I told him to follow me back to ramp. He took off through a no wake zone and I looked over at the cop and he took off after him. O poop i said. Then he kept going. Finally stopped. After he chased him for a while. Only gave him, me 1 ticket.

I was just bringing it up. The law is pretty specific, penalties can be severe, and most of the authorities are aware of the law. Back in the early 90's I chose to keep my kids off my standups because of all the idiots that started showing up on sit downs and I viewed them as extremely dangerous. If I had access to a private body of water I would've put my kids on skis, but ended up with BMX, skateboards and dirt bikes. Have fun.

we only ride early morning and on a private lake. otherwise he gets to be on the couch with me or we just play in the water.... worth it to see him ride though. makes me smile huge

Junior Stars racing starts kids at 10. In MI I know of one family that had their son taken by police and placed in protective custody after being allowed to operate a small watercraft alone, but observed from shore. I think it took 8 months, counselling, and a few court dates before the dad got his custody back. Be smart, and think about your kid's safety and future.

I ride Havasu, body beach. BUT, often times at 6 am when there is no one there. I was thinking I could get her started, just cruise around with the idle turned up. Just to get her feet wet on something. I'll look into the 300sx.

I have posted this before. This is my eight year old at Body Beach. Of course this pic has a couch in the back ground but honestly we only ride when there is basically no one around. I ride right next to him or in front and the reward of doing things like this with your kids is great!

I go postal when I hear about some of the stuff the state does , can't believe they could take your kid for doing an American thing like skiing with adult supervision in safe environment , silly laws are getting in the way of fun lol . Stuff like this is BS and make me want to leave the US . My girls like to ski and are 10 and 12 , the 10 year old wants to race , luckily I have a couple of friends that live on private lakes .

The problem is that not all parents are real bright. Example, back in the day my buddy put his 7 year old on a GPR1200 prior to any restrictions. The outcome, if you cant guess, was a ski meets a boat in a bad way incident. Unfortunately these laws get "traction" in the publics stupidity. Like the saying goes, "a few bad apples". Funny side note, he is also pissed off that his son can't legally ride a standup so we always had to go to Kerkhoff where no lawmen were around to ride. He is part of the reason the law is in place in California.

I hear you about parental judgement and if it only affected the family then let Darwin's theory prevail . The government shouldn't be a babysitter to the people IMHO . That is funny how the guy who caused the law is bitching about it .

Well, he didn't cause it on his own, but was part of the reasoning behind it for sure and boy did he want to bitch about it. Funny how we don't pay attention to or even care about things like this or rights being taken away until a time comes when it directly affects us. I agree with the reduction in the governmental protection movement probably to a larger extent than others. It is what it is, so private lakes may be a lucrative business if there is a large population in your area that you could fill a need for.

It all boils down to laws protecting two groups.
Group 1: Those too stupid to know better.
Group 2: those too young to know better.

lol mine is intelligent for his age but can be very stupid. But i have taught him calculate risk and keep a very close eye on him. on our lake parents let 10-12 year olds blast around on couches with 0 supervision. luckily noone has gotten hurt yet. but the cops started cracking down after they ran into the second dock. i personally don't think the number of years on this earth can determine who can and can't do things like drive, opperate a jetski, shoot a gun. with proper supervision all these activities can be safe an a ton f fun for you an your children. my advise is keep a close eye on them. my son has been driving a full size rock buggy for 2 years now. started when he was 6. He has full control of it. and i trust him on any obstacle he wants to try. but i will not allow him to go out unsupervised. same with the jetskis. this year he displayed great control over a ski and it was a blast watching him ride. but i wont cut him loose for at least a few years.

so in conclusion as soon as your children display control, awareness, and responsibility i would say ride with them. but dont let them loose for years
