Freestyle How powerful is a big engine?

I'm slowly getting all the parts together to build a 950. I will use a 6mm stroker crank with 89mm piston(dasa top end kit). And match it with the xscream stinger B pipe. Not sure if I'm going to use single or double 48 carb.

My question is Do anybody know approximatly how many HP can a similar engine produce? I'm sure somebody here have already put his engine on a dyno or heard about somebody who did it. I'm just curious to know what's the average for engine around 900-1000cc

Depends on who's porting and building it. Accessories make a big difference (ignition, compression, pump, etc)
A poorly built 950 may run no better than a well done 760 (extreme example)

Matt said it well, it depends who built it..... I rode a 900+cc Dasa & my XS846SS hit harder every where.

I can tell you the 1000cc motors on dry pipes are just crazy power. I let a buddy ride my new SF hull/XS1000, hes a surf riding that knows how to ride... He brapped it & the ski left him floating in mid air.... Wish we had it on camera

Best advise I can give, pick a engine builder, talk with him, follow his setup to a T....

It's totally true there's a lot of other parts that can modified performance. I just wanted an average. Is it more like 100hp or 150hp??
Maybe you could tell who are the best engine builder with comments on engines they have build.

You and everyone else on this board would love to see the numbers but due to all the variables, the manufacturers will not post them. That and all the dynos in the industry seem to be broke down or in the hands of people who have no interest in using them.

My money is on Jetworks, based on my own personal engine and a few others I've tried. Reasonably priced and better performing than some bigger and more expensive engines. Just my personal experience, of course.

Horsepower is meaningless in the world of freestyle and it's only bragging rights to people who don't know any better. A hardcore race motor designed to get the highest speed will produce way more power than anything else but it will almost certainly be crap in the lower revs. Maybe that ski can go 65mph+ and puts out 150hp but it'll take 10 seconds to get to top speed. Then put it against another ski that tops out at 40mph and maybe has 100hp but gets there is 2-3 seconds. I'd take the second ski everyday of the week.

Talk to various engine builders and let them know where you want the power. They may even steer you away from that motor and recommend something cheaper with all the power you'll ever need.

Sure about that? :clown:

A "hardcore" race engine needs power everywhere, especially on the bottom. What you're describing sounds like some cheap knucklehead tried to get a race engine to run on pump gas. Every well set up race engine I've ever tried had loads of bottom end power.

agreed. the motor in my sxi is an old race motor built for mid/top end and still hits hard as $#@! on low.

put it this way.........a big engine will literlly rip itself out of your hands, launch the ski 5 feet in the air with you flipping off the back of it before you even knows what hit you

(see post 4)

I wont lie...Im scared of that ski, and anyone who is not is lying!

I have learned 1st hand that "bottom end" is all about what builder can get your given engine "on the pipe" the quickest!

Just trying to make a point..... Numbers aren't everything.

Geez. Everyone pounced on me like flies on sh*t.

I've ridden some ported 701's that would dislocate your shoulders.
It seems to be all about the proper set-up for what you've got. Not just motor, but pump as well.
Someday I hope to find that set-up.

Factory Pipe says: (correct me if I'm wrong) the b-pipe can add up to 20 HP to a stock sj.
Stock sj 701 is (I think) 79 HP.

Therefore, if getting over 100 HP is your goal, then it can be done with only a few bolt-on mods.

lol, i was just saying that i have a pump/engine/pipe set up targeted more for top end yet it still has plenty of snap on low. but you are correct, numbers aren't everything. it leans more towards how its built.
