Last week, my umi steering thrust bearing blew apart, inturn the whole plate came loose.

So...

I ordered the JSS rebuild kit with the "tuff thrust", new top bearin, new o rings, and a new nylon nut...

I greased everything, and than installed it. I also applied locktite (blue) to the lock nut.

Today I rode for half an hour, and the POS already came loose!!!

What do I have to do to fix this??:dunno: :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

This is a very common problem. You're supposed to use red loctite and let it sit for 24 hours without touching the steering, but I tried that and mine still loosened up.

Some guys will actually put the nut in a vice and squish it at the top so it will lock on better or some guys will actually drill a hole through the nut and shaft and use a cotter pin to secure it.

After retightening mine many times it has finally stayed put. I guess oxidation built up and helped to lock it on.

crush the top of the nut in a vise works every time !~!! I have 3 running crushed nuts and NEVER had one come loose !! Simple, cheap, non threating, cake to adjust.. What could be easyer ?
if you drill a hole in your shaft you will need a few holes in the nut unless 1/2 turns work for you and fight a cotter pin.. !

The tbm locknut works very well, so does using 2 thinner nuts and tightening them together...not so sure where to get the nuts, a friend of mine got a bunch of them, but iv never seen the right size in a hardware store...maybe mcmaster-carr?

But iv been lucky and the stock nut doesnt loosen up on me even without loctite.

The perfect solution is to run 2 thin jam nuts. XFT does this on their system and it works perfect. I ran mine all last year and don't think I had to adjust it any

I just got my new UMI kit in the mail today, and it came with a
castlleated nut and a cotter pin (pretty sweet..now I don't have to modify
it myself). It also came with NO diagram, just written instructions referencing part numbers, but no diagram showing the part numbers. I couldn't find a diagram on the UMI website, either, just the same written instructions.

I did find this link, with a digital picture of the diagram, so that helped.
The diagram DOES exist...it just isn't readily available, it appears.

My kit came with THREE O-rings (large, small, and VERY small, like 3/4"
in diameter). I'm not sure where that third small one is supposed to go.
The instructions and diagram do not show or mention this O-ring.
Anyone know?
