How thick under pad for Flatwater Freestyle?

As thick as you can make it. I had 26mm and that was great.
Leaving the padding out of the footholds is one of the worse things you can do. That's exactly where you need it - don't skimp on it, especially there.

I find putting the padding on the underside of the foothold is better than on the bottom. The top of the foot is more sensitive.

I finally figured out that I needed my holds so severely over-padded that I'd have to violently kick in. Once you're in, it takes a strong conscious effort to come back out. And because it is all padding, it's nice and comfortable.

if you ride or used to ride a freak, no amount of padding is enough. freaks land brutally hard but we still love em.

Shi!!!!ttt... I just loaded up the top of my WDK holds and only put 8mm underneath, but have a total of 32mm (1.25") on top!! I was way more worried about the top of my foot than the bottom...

You guys think this is not a good set-up? I still have to kick my feet in...

Whatever works for you. But if you stop and think about it, the only place in the tray where you really really need the cushioning foam is wherever your feat are after an aerial....i.e., in the footholds. It makes zero sense to reduce the underpad there.

Jace Forest...BRAP!
It is all a preference, and what the foothold will allow. I do know the grey padding of any thickness sucks, it will thin out and squish after not much ride time. The black stuff holds its shape. If the foothold is big enough than put 26mm black under padding top and bottom.
The best holds I have ever kicked into were on a superfreak with the black 26mm top and bottom. I couldn't even tell my foot was locked in because it was like 2 pillows pressing against my foot, but when I tried to pull out they were stuck in, it was AWESOME!!

And if you just ride flatwater, no need to pad the whole tray with the 26mm like the pic above, it just adds a lot of extra weight. Only pad the holds with the 26mm then do the rest with like 8mm black under padding.

Just my .02

Fail. Completely did the opposite.

Any chance you have an example picture of this?

26mm black underpadding top and bottom...

had to switch from shoes with a thick sole to wrestling shoes but 100% worth.

brought riding to a whole new level of comfort.

Thanks for the info, I was also wondering this. Was thinking about shaving some padding out of the tray underneath my footholds, but now I will just switch from the thick soled converse high tops to some ultra minimalist high top wrestling shoe.

Thanks!
