You could also put the head back on and do the rope through the plug hole trick. I have done that to remove and install flywheels and couplers. You will also need a puller to get the flywheel of the shaft. I bought a harmonic balancer puller from O'Reilly's and it worked great, just tighten in down and give it a little ding with a hammer and it popped right off.
jup, rope trick. Ive done it twice without an impact gun. Just take a big ratchet to get it of. I hold a breaker bar between the coupler and use the ratchet on the other hand. But that alone isnt going to get the flywheel off. Getting the nut off is the easy part. You will need a harmonic balance puller or a flywheel puller to get the flywheel off.
Rope in the cylinder and tapping on the ratchet with a hammer works if you dont have an impact. I did two last week this way. It works so well you can use a small 3/8 drive ratchet.
I've done the string method with great results. Make sure the top of the piston is in the chamber before putting the string in the chamber. Use fat string.
