I just got done checking my timing with a timing light - it's dead nutz on at 30 degrees at idle.

I found this on the MSD instructions page:

"(Because of the advanced circuitry in the MSD Ignition the true timing is 5 degrees less tha what the timing mark will show). To achieve your true timing, subtract 5degrees from the number you wrote down. Example 30 degrees less 5 degrees equals 25 degrees of true timing

So to get my 28 degrees of true timing I have to set my static timing at 33 degrees when using the LED indicator as my guide?[/quote:]

These are instructions for the old analog ignition boxes... not for any of the new digital ignition boxes!

So, what about the digital units......are they spot on on timing?

The PN of the unit this applied to off the instruction sheet from MSD was unit #4242, 4243 and 4244.

Yup...if the LED works, that is.

Seriously, fab yourself up a bendix holder, and use a timing light. I was 2 degrees off.

No problem, picked an old flywheel cover last night for $20.

Okay....my timing wasn't what I thought it was.
I was at:
30 degrees static
4000 begin retard
8250 rev limit
19 degrees retard off max (11 degrees advance at 8250)

I think those are VERY conservative settings. I am going to spice this up a bit.

I agree, but you'll never know unless you try. I think there are several types of amature engine builders - the ones that are so afraid they'll blow and engine and those the kind-of hope they will so they can learn. I've blown the engine I cut about 3 times - it sucks when it happens, but you get to inspect you work. Plus, if he does spice it up and it gets more bang - that will really be FUN! Even if it is only for a while.

Maybe I'm just silly.

Seriously...a start retard RPM of 4000 is pretty low. This isn't just guessin - I have plotted out several ignition curves, taking into account some limits & numbers that a couple of pro builders have provided.

Exactly. I thought I had it at 5k, but apparently not.
From what I gathered, you need to be careful where you're going to be at 6000-6500 RPM. At 6.5k, I will be below 20 degrees advance.

Oh, and I dropped my rev limit from 8250 to 8000, which further steepens the curve a bit.

about the bit on the pick up repair.wouldnt it make more since to say- wrap the sides of the pick up with a thin peice of fiberglass and resin before it is installed.(before it breaks) i thought about this before, looking at the way that the pick ups break, but wasnt sure about how it would effect its operation.you're saying that you've repaired and reused these with success?i have a set up i'll be installing over the winter and this looks like a good idea to me if it works.i had one break before and couldnt for the life of me figure out what was going on bcuz the thing ran great on the trailer and like crap on the water.ticked me off so bad that i parted the boat out, only to find a cheesy broke pickup as i was taking it apart to ship it all.it would have been a sad story exept i bought a superjet with the money

also i think the single channel digital ones are -5 degrees on the static timing.

If you're installing new triggers, fool-proof them at that time.
If you've got broken triggers already, they can be fixed.

Cool info! I had my TL set up by TJ (tim judge) . It's a 6mm stroker with about 205 psi. Static timing is at 28 degrees. He also turn off the electric starter function so the engine hits even at real low rpm and if you really like blipping the throttle (like I do!)

He (TJ) is the best.

By the way, it is also important to understand that timing from a race ski to a freestyle ski would be totally different. The timing you guys are talking about are WAY off what we run in our race Lamey's.

hey scottie you need to post some pics of yours and your brothers blasters over here so that those of us that are banned from pwcyesterday can drool over them.

do some showin off. you guys have some of the nicest blasters I have ever seen and I bet there are a lot of people on here that haven't seen them.

I thought I had posted them over here. When I get a chance, I will post them for ya. We are working on two more for next year, got a couple of ideas up my sleeves for paint schemes, etc.

Steve,

Is that the function that turn ign off to let it start easier??

What is the beneficits to turn it off?
