Take everything off (flywheel, stator, starter, engine bed plates, all bolts on the bottom, EVERYTHING)

There are a couple of slots along the mating surfaces. Get a screwdriver in there and twist/lift the halves apart.

What he said, and make sure you don't pry against the mating surfaces, just the external tabs.

cant get flywheel off, its stuck good. so we pulled the carb, turns out i also broke 2 reeds. the crank is stil good, no rust. there was this mix of water and gas n stuff on the crank ( brown poopy mix ) and we cleaned it out.

you need a flywheel puller. A harmonic balancer or sterring wheel puller from a local auto store for like 15 bux will work. You usually cant get a really good look at the crank bearings with the cases together.

yea we got a puller, it looks like a pair on tongs, with a screw and you attatch it and tap with hammer. would you think since it turns smoothly by hand, that it is probably ok? we washed it out with my premix, and its nice and smooth.

I would say it's probably ok. I would definitely drain the gas tank and take a look in your carb. If there's water in there, it would cause it not to run.

If you use the tong type puller you may damage or bend the flywheel.

Use the three bolt holes in the center the hub when pulling the flywheel off.

you cant always tell just by it turning over. Its a good sign by doesnt tell you everything. If its been sitting full of water I would definitely atleast take it apart and clean it out really well. If youve got the motor pulled and everything else dissembled your 95% of the way there anyways. Just buy the right puller I thought id use it once and Ive used it like 15 times.

I am guessing that, while you have that "jaw" type puller, that you didn't actually attempt to use it. I say that because I doubt that you would be able to get the jaws between the flywheel ring gear and case.

If you removed all of the bolts and bedplates, then the only thing holding the cases together (aside from some sealant) is the stator mounting bolts. If you were prying the cases apart and didn't get them apart, you now need to get the flywheel off just to inspect and make sure that you didn't crack the stator mounting plate.

Since you've gone this far, it would be well worth your time to finish the job correctly.

Good luck.
