Other How would you handle this situation?

Hey guys,

So I sent my motor out to be rebuilt. The guy did an awesome job and the motor runs great with how it is set up. I needed to get a new starter so I bought one a while ago and was finally able to install it today. I pulled the old starter and realized you have to pull the flywheel cover to reset the bendix.

After pulling the cover I notice quite a bit of rust and corrosion. For just being rebuilt that did not seem right at all. The Stator has rust all over it and so does the bendix. I did not see an area where the water could get in until I looked at the bottom of the cases and saw where a piece of the gasket to the flywheel cover was missing. There is a bunch of corrosion already built up down there and I am guessing it is time for a new stator, bendix and possibly a flywheel.

I also just purchased a new stator from @jet Maniac and now it looks to be toast.

My question is, should I contact the builder and assume he is going to replace everything that has been damaged since it was not me who put the ski back together, or am I SOL?

Thanks,

Shane

So jetworks assembled the motor, stator, flywheel, bendix, flywheel cover and you installed it in your ski, then today you took the flywheel cover off for the first time?

Post up some pics.
As asked above, did art put the stator, flywheel, Bendix, and starter on?
You say you didn't "put it together". Did you instal the motor in the ski...?

I would assume responsibility would lie on the person who installed the flywheel cover and the starter. If you installed either of those its probably going to be a learning lesson, otherwise you might be able to get some help. Don't ever assume somebody will take care of everything, theres aways a cost involved somewhere..... Good luck!

Sounds like your trying to throw someone under the bus. If Art did install these components a simple call to him would of been better then this post. If this was mine I would replace the bendix, clean the stator, and media blast the flywheel( if you send it to me I will do it for free) spray a generous amount of silicone wd 40 on everything, then reinstall. Be sure to put a thin layer of grease on the inside of the bottom case to catch any metal.

^^^ This! Rust is ugly but not an automatic total loss. The bendix and crank seal area will be the most critical areas. Make Art aware of the issue and ask his advise on what should be done at this point. See what he offers up and go from there.

Thank you for the input.

The builder installed the stator. and everything else on that motor. I only put it in the ski. I am not trying to throw him under the bus, I am just trying to figure out if the responsibility to fix it is going to fall on my shoulders. I spent quite a bit of money that and to only get one ride out of the ski really sucks.

The very FIRST thing I'd do: picking up the phone and discussing the issue with him (as I have in the past). I certainly wouldn't be seeking the Internet's approval of my actions prior to that.

If the situation is as you describe it, then I have no doubt Art will work with you to fix it.

That's always the first step.... Errors are made ,but there's no reason to put them on a billboard if the builder has not even had a chance to correct it. We are in a small industry (most of us know each other) .Always give ANY builder the first shot before posting . It's just fun for us ,but it's their living.

i can see this guys point at wanting to know what is reasonable to expect before talking to the mechanic cause some will bully people into thinking its not their responsiblilty and if youre not sure of your position, you could be inclined to just say ok and walk away but i can also see matt e and sportfish position. maybe not naming the mechanic would have been the best way.

good luck man, that does sound frustrating

Great advice ^^
Art has been around for a long time, I'm pretty sure a phone call would take care of everything.

real simple. did you pay for the work to be done? if so, call jetworks and send tons of pictures. it always best to assume if its not on the bill then it didnt get looked at.

I doubt that any engine builder would put the parts together like this without notifying you, unless this was not a total rebuild and just a top end ?
