Thanks for the comments guys! :beerchug:
Time has been the biggest issue for me - this has all been done mostly on Saturday and Sunday mornings/afternoons.

Last night I did the first pass on sanding the Duratec primer.

Sanded through in quite a few spots which means two things:

  • I did NOT lay down enough primer
  • some surfaces were not completely flat, but now are
In the bond / lip area around the whole ski, I was not that good with the HVLP in getting enough primer laid down in those spots. I plan on using a brush and lay down a couple thick coats, then use the HVLP gun once more and put down more primer.

Duratec is heavier then normal paint - a lot heavier actually. Using the 1 quart cup on the HVLP gun, my arm was getting TIRED quick. I kept switching from my right to left arm, and the results were not consistent. Next time I will catalyze smaller batches of Duratec and use the smaller cup on the HVLP gun. (1/4 quart I think it is?).

I am hoping to put in a couple hours every evening after work this week in sanding, and hopefully be ready for the mold making process this weekend.

More to come...

great job Roo!... the process as just begun! get ready for countless hours of laying glass :)

Thanks Steve.

Yes - still a LONG way to go.

The top *should* be a lot faster, as I won't have to build the flange like I did on the bottom which was the most time consuming so far.

For the top plug, I am going to leave the hull in the bottom mold, flip it over, then use the bottom mold flange as the surface that will get incorporated into the top mold (hopefully that made sense).

Still playing with test layup panels / what the final part will be.

Hmmm, the feeling of Déjà vu comes to mind here.....

Hey, thanks for the major props, but what do I know? Don't pay any attention to the guy behind the curtain.....LOL

How did I miss this thread? KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!!

Really, good job!!

Updates?

hope to wake up early in the AM Saturday and get the last of the duratec put down, so then hopefully sunday, finish the sanding / polishing.

ugh, wish i had a twin/clone.

crazy work! def looks like your not a novist, always wondered how u would go about makeing one.

When u lay everything, would the bottom shell be bigger than the original? really dont know alot about that, just curious??

What he's making is just the plug. From the plug, you build the mold.
When you lay parts up in the mold, they will be the same size as the original (the plug).

Looking good bro!! It seems that one day there will be a ton of aftermarket or custom boats out in our sport, prob more than stockers.

this...project...sucks...errr. must think positive... end result. can't wait to get the bottom done... once the mold is done and i can flip it over, i am confident the top will go a LOT faster.

there is a STUPID amount of sanding in a project like this. when you think your done with a phase... your not. a lot of 1 step forwards, 3 back.

nothing special to report - more sanding of the primer. i had to lay down a few more coats which I did last weekend. once dried, sand down with 80 grit to remove the light texture/orange peel.

after 80 grit, then 150, 220, 400, 800, 1000 then polishing / waxing. the problem when going up to a higher grade, the sand paper clogs after only a few passes.

sanding paper/block in one hand, air fitting in another hand to blow off the paper... sucks, time consuming but the only way. once i hit 800, i will switch over to wet sanding rather then dry.

between grit changes, used some cheap $1 spray primer in a can as a "guide coat". this way i know what has already been sanding and can see scratches removed from the previous grit.

as long as a do a grit-a-night this week, mold making time this weekend. i came down with the flu a week back which put me out of commission for a little while.
