Super Jet Hydrolocked or something else

My friends ski locked up tight. We could not turn the coupler with two hands and the the plugs removed. We took the flywheel off and put a wrench on the flywheel bolt and got her loose.
It fired right up, but started to run away but not as fast as if it was really lean. The stop button was able to stop it, and engaging the choke would slow it down.
He took it out for a spin and opened it up for a while. Came back in and it idled fine and idled fine out of the water. Everything seems ok.

He was thinking it was hydro-locked but we are not sure and don't have any experience with having that happen to the extreme.

Does a hydro-locked ski have these symptoms?

It it common for a ski taking on a bunch of water to lock that tight? Any tips to get it unlocked easier?

No, hydro-locked motors would be locked up due to the inability to compress water between the cylinder and head. pulling plugs would have fixed that. when it was locked up, how long had it been sitting. Did it lock up while riding or was it locked up after sitting for a week in between rides?

Locked up while riding. We disassembled at the beach.
We had been riding a full tank before it happened. Then he was doing some sub/nose stabs. He was riding it and it bogged down and died.

How did it sound when it broke loose? If it was hydro locked, it wouldn't have cranked right up without a little work to remove te water

Once it broke loose it was still a bit hard to turn at TDC. When it started up it the cranking noise sounded normal.
Is it possible to to have so much water in the cases that the crank will not turn like this?
I also don't recall seeing any white stuff (water/oil) mix at the plug holes or on the plug.

I am starting to think something is wrong on the inside of the engine.

It would be possible to have a lot of water in the case but like i said, if there is that much water, you would have to do quite a bit to get it dried out/running. You would know for sure there's water in it. I would also be leaning towards internals. But I say if it's running, forget about it! Lol
could you have run somethig into the pump?

I have that run away symptom sometimes on fresh builds, just adjusting the carbs fixes it.
Generally the carb is too lean which causes the runaway. and explains the lean siezure (lockup).
Id richen those carbs up and check your plugs to make sure its dialed right.
otherwise you could have top end damage down the road.
Id also check compression at this point to make sure you havnt damaged it already.
this is all advice assuming your using the right 40:1 mixture of gas/oil

Its a original 03 motor with lots of time on it. I am thinking that something internally is going. Knowing him he will just run it till it blows.

mine has been locking up latly, was the wrist needle bearings jamed inbetween the piston and cylinder, rode it till it locked a finally time where the conrod snaped wrecked the cyclinders, hole in bottom crankcase, needs full rebuild now

He ended up tearing it down after his compression went to 0. He had a chunk out of a piston and a broken ring. I think this was a secondary effect and something else other than water was the cause.
