I hate installing cylinders

My fingertips are raw from compressing rings and it's still not on and I gave up for the day.

Engine in hull:1

I've heard of people putting zip ties over the rings, slide the cylinder down and it kinda pushes the zip tie off as the piston slides into the cylinder, then cut the zip ties. I've never tried it, always managed with my fingers, but I could see how it might work.

I was gonna say, the only time I have ever struggled with rings was when I done it in the hull.

Remind us how much time and aggravation you saved by not pulling the motor and setting it on the bench? ;)

It's kinda like changing out a starter without pulling the motor. Sounds easier but is in fact a 2-3 hr job. Meanwhile, had you committed to just yanking the motor in the first place, it's probably a 20 minute job tops.

I did the 50 hr top end refresh on my SS865 in the hull and I would never bother with that again. I can literally have my engine out and on the bench in under 7 minutes.

Trying doing a zxi1100!! I managed after about 45 minutes. Thinking about after I bet it would be easy to hang the cases/crank upside down and have the cylinders upside down on the bench and lower the Pistons into the cylinders vs having to hold the cylinder up with one hand.

I’ve done numerous top ends on my BB1050 in the hull. They had the long case studs which made it even worse.

If you had a small hoist you could would make things so much easier. You don’t really need it on the bench, just high enough out of the hull to sit it down on a piece of plywood or a couple 2x4’s.

I've also heard of people putting the pistons in the cylinder just barely, setting the cylinder on some sort of block or something to hold it just over the case, then sliding the wrist pins in. Always sounded trickier than just squeezing the rings to me.
