does anyone have any connections in the tulsa area? I hate waking up to go to my job everyday, I was thinking trying to get on as a ups driver, does anyone know what that would pay? i havea family to support so i need to make at least 50k a year. I have 3 years experiance as a Project manager and estimator. just wandering if anyone knew some people in the tulsa are that may be interested, I am tired of sitting behind a desk all day even if it does mean i can look at the x. anyways sorry for the rant just thought i'd throw it out there.

You have to load trucks for two or 3 years and then hopefully you can become a driver. They get paid though

i am an estimator for a steel company. I take requisition for fabrication packages and give our customers a price of what we will build it for. they are econimizers for the petrochemical industry.

i heard that if you know someone in ups they can get you through the loading stage usually in a couple of months. but then again i dont work there so i dont know how true that is.

it takes years to get on at UPS as union employee full-time (depending on location). I know here is louisville it can take up two 12 years for some to become a full-time driver. You do have to pay your dues, but if you stick it to the end - its all worth it. a starting yearly income as a drive is around 45k but once you stick around, i know guys who make 100k+ delivering packages. Plus a benefits package you can't compete with anyone else around. UPS does hire people "off the street" straight into full-time driving positions - but the chance of being that "one" guy is very slim.

I am a Aircraft load supervisor here in louisville, ky (UPS main hub). My father is going to retire in a few years as a driver. UPS has been good to the family!

Tulsa gotta have some good jobs with your experience.

thanks slick chaos, tulksa does have some good stuff but my main problem is i want a change of scenery every now and again which is why i was looking into the ups thing. i cant handle being behind a desk for much longer. wavedemon i know man, thats what sucks so bad is im kinda trapped but not happy at all. but cant afford to take a job that im happier at but make much less money.

A friend of mine started on with Werner, a large freight trucking business making 40 ish a year. Although you have kids if you want something different long haul trucking is an option.

yeah i cant do long haul although i always thought i would like it. I was thinking about a fireman but my wife does not want to be at home at night alone.

I dont know how old you are, but if you are 34 or younger...join the Navy. You will be making over 50k easy in a couple years and that is without a degree, plus the bennies are awesome. If you have a degree you can be closer to the 80 to 100k range shortly, depending on where you are stationed. I made 70 grand my 3rd year in, stationed in Hawaii...before i got my degree.

dubs, what area of did you get a degree for in college?
I just graduated with a 4 year degree, 3.5 gpa, and now I'm working at a waverunner rental place at the beach for crappy pay. It's really who you know when it comes to jobs...

no degree man. i worked in the shop first as a fitter and welder and they wanted someone who knew what they were quoting instead of someone with a degree that had never built any of it.

Right out of college I was a cable guy.. was just going to do it for a few months and ended up with it for about 3 years on and off. If you can find a good subcontracter to work for it's a great job. I was taking home $1000 / week on a bad week. The key is to learn how to install hi-speed and telephony if it's in your area, as that's where the money's at.

Gets you outside, your truck is your office, no boss breathing down your neck (for the most part), and you stay somewhat active climbing poles, crawling under houses, etc.

I'm a fancy Field Service Engineer with a respected Cancer Diagnostics Company and I made more as a cable guy. Go figure.
