For salt water I gap them to .018. The boat revs a little cleaner. As Odd Duck said, I have heard people say therir boat runs diff in salt water, a smaller gap seems to help.
Unless I sink the ski, the plugs don't get changed. Which is quite a while now on the FX!

interesting..never heard that about the plug gaps before...

Every time I ride my fx..Im AMAZED at how little water is let in.....driest boat EVER!!!!!

and Im with you..plugs get changed only if there's a sinking...sometimes they last for months at a time without even pulling the boots off

As nobody has said it, the higher your comp the smaller the gap....

Indexing plugs helps too but its a PITA.

If you are going to spend bulk cash on mods, why wouldn't you do all you can to make your ski perform at 100%?
Like someone else said, I see skis often that have all the gear but are not all they could be for lack of detail.

Keep em clean & gapped & change them often, its such a cheep part...

but why change it if it is running exactly same as if a new set were installed? waste of money, even if its not a lot of money.

It's funny, I used to gap my plugs on everything;car, bikes, outboards, even the damn lawnmower. When I got into skis I found that the factory gaps were very consistent on the NGKs versus the Champions I ran in all the other stuff, so I didn't gap them any more for the skis. BUT, a few weeks ago I pulled and regapped the plugs that were in the SJ. Typically the stock NGK gaps were .030 to .032. I regapped to .026 based on some input I got here on the X. The ski feels like it runs a little stronger. Now this could be just like that feeling you get after an oil change in your truck and all of a sudden it feels like it runs better. Or it could be that it is cooler out lately which is making the SJ run a little better. But, who knows? Maybe it did help. And for the 5 seconds per plug it takes to gap them, I'm gonna do it from now on.

most likely it is the weather. I rode through November last year and eventuially it got so cold that my ski started running lean and I had to rich it up a little.
The world is putting a cold air intake on your motor!

my sj has been running like crap since last time i was out. Found black crap all over the rear plug when i pulled the cap. It felt like it was running on one cyl but both were sparking. Is it possible that a stator could make my ski run like crap?

I've heard alot of people say, "I've got a bad plug" after installing brand new plugs. No you don't they just aren't gapped right. :Banane37:
