I rebuilt my first Carb...and hosed it up.

So I rebuilt my Mikuni 44SBN. This is the first time I've ever tried to do it.

It went well. Right up until the point where you have to push the new Check Valve grommets through the Pump Diaphragm.

I skewered one of them. The first one popped in without much effort and was a breeze. I thought "Cool, this is easy!". So then when I was putting the second one in... it took a lot more pressure to pop it into place. It never slid in place at all and my screw driver pushed right through it. I'm still kinda wondering if the rubber was slightly over-sized or just harder than the other one.

Yes, I oiled the slots and the tip of the grommet.

I was using a phillips screw driver that really wasn't sharp. It had a flat end on it. It worked fine for the first one, but it destroyed the second grommet.

Ugh. Anyway... lesson learned.

Where can I get the special tool to pop those in place? I have to order another carb rebuild kit too. Unless someone on the X here has some extra grommets they're willing to part with for a reasonable price?

The Carb is the last piece of my ski thats been the bottleneck of keeping me off the water. I'm half-tempted to just buy a new one.

Any insight or tips to rebuilding my carb would be appreciated. :)

if your old one is still good try and use that one. you can atleast put it in and see if it seals good, if it does just reuse it

Yeah, a friend of mine suggested that already.

The problem is, the ones I took out were very hard rubber. It needed a rebuild. When I pulled them out, they BOTH tore in half.

Next time I take them out, I'll be a lot more careful. The carb was in sad shape though, it had SAND in it. :(

There was blockage inside of it too. Looked like leaves or something.

take a small pop rivet and grab the sheetmetal skirt with pliers
tap out the middle part; it is the perfect tool
to pop them in every time (using the round end of course!)

When I rebuild, I REALLY fight hard to find a reason to leave the current ones in place.

I seriously considered this. But, being it was the first time that I was doing it, I "deferred" to my elders - and assumed they knew WTF was going on. So I replaced them anyway.

I didn't want to half-a$$ it. So I did it. And I screwed it up, lol. :)

I learned something though, so it's not all bad.

Also, I don't completely understand exactly how a Carb works (although I have a damn good idea now...), so I figured I was "better safe than sorry."

Lol? :)

Lol! I don't have a CLUE as to what you're talking about. :)

I've never used a pop rivet gun, although I know what one is. I don't know how they work though.

Care to elaborate a little? :)

Doubt it would help..but you could always try throwing the rubber piece in the freezer for a bit. Should shrink it a bit and may make it easier to slide in.

I have never had any issues with them.

However i use this method with bearings quite often.

JetManiac was kind enough to give me another grommet. Thanks again! :)

I fabbed my own tool, based on the picture I found here:

http://www.seadoosource.com/images/diskinst1.jpg

I was able to install the grommet without an issue once I made that tool.

Now I need to re-insert my high and low speed jet.

I can't tell which is which.

They are not the same length or diameter.

Which is which please?

(Yes, I could just screw them in and see which one doesn't quite screw in properly... but I'd rather have some patience and ask the experts. :) )

Thanks in advance!!

the main(the larger of the 2) is on the top behind the metering plate..there's no way the main will fit in the pilot hole so no worries.
nightrider, the freezer will make the rubber only harder so therefore more difficult to put it.rubber does not shrink like metal in cold temps.

Thanks the replies!

I was able to put my carb back together. I replaced my fuel lines, too. It's all on my ski. I just have to put my tank back in and hook up the fuel lines... and test it. :)

Good God, this has got to be the last thing to make it RUN. :)

Thanks Fast Fuel Lines!
