I think that's bad advice.

I only have friends who ride skis because I bought a ski. I didn't know anything about the sport. My dad bought me a WR3 when I was 18. I rode with a few friends that had couches and that was it. Once I bought a 650sx I found on craigslist, someone from the lake sent me to this site, which is where I met Tom21, which is how I met the other Gulf riders. I met Pete on this site but only because I was buying used parts for my superjet. He lived 3 blocks from my best friend and in 10 years at the lake and 4 with a ski I had only seen him once and never met him. Now I ride with him weekly. I have a few friends who I was able to talk into getting skis because I have mine.

Having a ski helps you meet people with skis. Having a ski helps convince others to get skis.
to each his own. but i knew people with skis and i still rode by myself when i built my first ski. skis were broken, people were busy, others were gone to races in other states. but what i was getting at, is the advice some one gave for buying two skis. one for you and a friend ski. i cant say that i would do it if i didnt already have a group of riders. because of the fact that all the upkeep and gas would be on me. doesnt sound fun to me

I am with all the guys that say a/m hull and good components. Used saves tons of money!

I see that you are a new member so do you have a ski at all? Make sure you don't do an impulsive move and regret it. Spend lots of time researching your purchase. I use to be so impulsive and wasted tens of thousands of dollars because I would go buy a brand new toy,use it for a week or two and lose my ass on it to sell or trade in on another toy.

There are plenty of people who will let you try their ski so get an idea of what you really want. Sorry to be a parent here but rather people learn from my mistakes.

I agree with buying a cheap loaner ski to help get griends into the sport. I have convinced 3 friends to buy skis because i let them ride mine. but I also agree that once one of your friends rides yours for 3+ days, its time for them to invest in their own.

So I passed the new route. Thanks for all the replies, I was all over the place on what to buy or build. I ended up buying a very clean 05 superjet that I will do a few things to.

Totally agree.

I bought my first ski (650sx) and mostly rode by myself the first season, but i eventually saw other people at the lake with sj's and kawa's, became friends with them and now we have a riding crew and i have made some very good friends over the years.

Congrats on the new ski.

I rode by myself for the first 10 rides at least and eventually met one or two people on the forums to ride with every once in a while. I met 440/550 at the lake and he's all about getting people into the sport. I have my own ski but Its not fair cause his backup ski is way more fun. Every time is go ride if bring friends along and even picked up a roundie for my friend to build. Hope to see you in havasu come riding season OP.

Not sure why everyone is recommending flatwater backflip skis??? He said cruising around, having fun and maybe ripping some surf. For 8K, I think a completely Freeride ready RN Superjet all pimped out. a Trinity EVO, maybe an older lightweight Carbon Superjet by Wammer or 24-7, or Lenzi ....or MAYBE you could get an older Freak, Rickter, EME, KDX or WCF ready to ride? (prob too expensive).

Basically, as a Kawi guy, I'd say for that $, get a used Superjet. Make sure it has footholds, aftermarket impeller, Factory B pipe, hood, aluminum handlepole, is super clean and has a fresh motor. Basically you are getting a better than new ski, with an extra $3000-4000 at least in parts.
