If you live in FL, get in here!

I'm looking at moving to FL in the next year or two. I'm from the mid-west and have only visited in the winter. Next summer I plan on taking 3-4 weeks to explore the state to get a feel for the different areas and towns.
From the few times I've visited FL the only place I will exclude is the Miami area... I have no desire to live in the Miami metro area. Where would you live if you could choose anyplace in the state, and why?

I have lived in the the Jacksonville area my whole life and now live about 30 miles south of Jax in a small town right in the middle of the state. Not sure if I really care to live anywhere else because I hate living in the city. If that's your thing, Jax is a good place to live and it not too congested.

Southeast Florida is one big city from Miami to West Palm Beach. It is not "southern". Traffic sucks. Houses are tiny and expensive with no yards. The weather and beaches are great.

Im in pinellas. I was raised by country folk so i feel like the world is closing in on me at times. 40 years ago it was nothing but orange groves here and my dad rode his dirt bike near the house. Now its working hard to be the southern new york. We are 90% built out and i thij we have the highest population in the state. Our traffic is a total poop show. Its a fun place to live. Lakes, the gulf (although every beach is a swim zone 200 yards out), theme parks, 3 hours to daytoba or sebastian, 1 hour to croom atv state park, 1 motor cross track in the county and 3 within a hour, go kart tracks, etc. Tons to do here. Just so many people. I kind of want to move...

Thanks everybody. I think I would like to live in a smaller coastal town with 1-5 acres of land so a shop can be built. Is there any surf riding be had on the gulf side or just the Atlantic side?

Where can you ride if the first 200 yards are swimming areas?

I haven't experienced this on the east coast.

Usually little to no waves on gulf coast compared to east.

You hit the head on the nail Shane. Plus if you like fishing. Diving. You have to run far to get anywhere. Rule of thumb on west coast is 1 mile per 1 foot of depth off shore. Reason being why they have no waves. No depth to build momentum.

East coast = beast coast.

If i had to choose it'd be between north of lauderdale up to north Palm Beach or from new Smyrna up to jax. That's basically where you'd be closest to the better surf riding locations.

I grew up with family in boca and my parents have a place in Boynton. Kinda partial to that area but really you're close to everything that gives you so much to do. Mia is 2hr drive, 45min to lauderdale and del ray and west palm are 15mins. Can't beat that and top it off you have an active crew that rides constantly.

Sand bars ln the right tide. Dont count on being a surf rider on the gulf coast. Anytime we do get good surf its inside the zone. We sometimes get some nice waves further out but they are never long surf-style waves. Thegood riders can get some aerial action going on but its rarely big and clean, never long.

St. Augustine/Jacksonville area. I did exactly what you are thinking a few years ago, lived in Daytona Beach for two years, am now back in Minnesota. It was an awesome two years but not a long term solution for us. I'd say do it, very unlikely that you regret it.
