I'm about to get my first standup ('96 750 sxi) and need your help!

Well the time has finally arrived and I will officially become a standup owner in a few days.

My brother-in-law has a 1996 750 SXI that has been sitting in his parent's garage in Florida for the past 6 years and said its all mine if I want it. The ski apparently has about 30-40 hours on it but again has been sitting for 6 years, with oil and I imagine gas inside of it all that time.

With that I have a few questions:

  1. Does anybody have a manual for the 750 sxi so I can learn the basics of caring for the ski? I'm not a mechanical guy at all but I'm always up for learning.
  2. Does anybody know of a shop in NJ (figures Jr. left, just my luck) where I can bring this ski to be brought back up to shape? I would imagine it could probably use a tune up among other things.
  3. I hope that I can get my hands on the manual but if not, does anybody have any winterization steps for this ski? With my couch its pretty easy b/c its fuel injected so I'm not messing with any carbs or anything but with this thing I have no idea.
  4. How much of a risk am I running if I store this outside and not in my garage? Unfortunately I don't have the room for the ski so I'm hoping the driveway wouldn't hurt it too bad.

Any tips, suggestions or anything that you can think of that will allow me to get this thing up and running well this summer would be greatly appreciated.

I'm looking forward to getting out on this thing come April (I've never been on a standup so I'm sure it will just dragging me around in the water) and want to make sure I use this time I have to get it running right and ready to go.

BTW, it hasn't gotten up here yet, so does anybody have any of their own pictures of what one of these looks like stock?

Sweet deal, now you just need to learn how to ride.

Is it oil injected?

I'd drain the gas, drain the oil, replace both with good stuff. Rebuilding the carbs is probably in order.

Winterizing..

Fog the carbs
Fog the cylinders
Put Sta-bil in the gas
If it's been sitting 6 years, hopefully the water was blown out of it before it was stored. If you do run it on a garden hose, blow out as much water as you can and then run some pink antifreeze through it.
Pull the battery and keep it on a tender.

I just found out it is coming up with no battery. He is under the impression that any old motorcycle battery won't fit that I need to get one specifically for this model of ski. Is that correct?

Also, does anybody know a place in NJ where I can take this to have the carbs rebuilt? Is the new person in Jr.'s shop reputable?

A battery should be easy to find. Don't worry bout that until spring.

In spring I would do everything that was mentioned earlier and change the plugs too! Get some fogging oil in the cyllinders for now. It should fire right up.

Cool, I'll just focus on fogging then and getting a manual so I can see what I got myself into.

your gonna need a battery to fog it .get a Jetworks battery and it will last you 5 years .

The guy who took over Jr's place has a rep allright ..........for shooting people with pellet guns when he's mad .

Send the carbs to LPW in Georgia .He rebuilt mine last year and they hit hard and the ski starts and runs MINT .He won't be too busy over the winter

I'd rather not get shot.

How hard is it to take the carbs out? Like I said, I'm a mechanical novice but am willing to give it a shot if I have some instructions. Is there any place that I can order a manual online?

Rebuilding your own carbs is surprisingly easy, however I don't know if the 1996 Kawis had Mikunis or Keihins.

Find John Zigler on this board and order two carb rebuild kits and do it yourself. The kits come with a full schematic of the carbs and it's a simple matter of match and replace. It's will get you familiar with working on your skis and will save you a considerable amount of cash.

The good news Alex on here does great work and is reputable

The bad news is he is probably up to ears in work to get ready for Daytona

why do you feel you need to rebuild the carbs .. they just may be perfect as they are .. try it before you waste your time rebuiding them .. I have bought many old skis that have sat for years .. many years and most have not had any carb issues ..i just drained the old gas .. dropped a few extra drops of 2 stroke oil down the cylinders and then primed the carbs with a squirt of gas ... with fresh gas in the tank .. away they go .. if it was put a way properly .. that ski should be fine as it is ... just get yourself a good battery and ride !
