SXR Impeller Gromet

On my 11'. THe gromet or seal right where the driveshaft goes into the impeller, this gromet is squeezing out on one side. IT looks like its fills in the voids or smooths the water flow transistion of the shaft and impeller. I know this should cause cavitaion issues but, how important is it if I to remove it permanantly ? Should I replace it?

i wouldnt remove it completely, You need to put it back where it belongs. I have had this happen a few times. and ended up replacing it. If you can grease it up and reinstall it, it should be ok as long as its not streched or damaged. Solas makes a aluminum cone that will replace it for life. if you run with out it, then you can very well expect some drag and cavitation. Not a night and day kind of feeling but, water can also make its way into the spline area, then make it harder on your disassembly later on .. my .02

it also keeps sand and crap out of the spline area so you dont have wear on the spines. get a new one and make sure the splines are greased up nicely before reinstalling. i did so and noticed that that gross rattle sound when out of water was no longer there!

The set screw worked just fine for me

The splines should be perfectly clean and greased. The seal usually needs some sealant or glue to insure perfect sealing. This area is usually ignored because splines never completely fail. With care and maintenance splines will stay in like new condition. Otherwise they get clanky much faster.
