Super Jet Impeller Removal Question

Hi everyone. I am recently a new owner of a 1990 superjet. At the start up it would caveat some before it would catch and run fine. So I decided to replace the large seal that is in-between the impeller pump and the hull. While I have everything apart I decided as well to replace the seals and bearing for the impeller. This is where I have run into problems. One of the previous owners installed a Skak Trak 9-17 and I can’t seem to get it off to get to the bearing. To the best of my knowledge it is reverse thread so I know I am not going the wrong way. I do have the tool to hold the end of the drive shaft in the vise. I have tried heat, impact wrench, and soaking the threads for a day to see if I could get it to turn but I haven’t had any luck. Is there something I am missing? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kevin

I use a BIG crescent on the prop, and a BIG 1/2" drive 2' long rachet on the driveshaft holder socket.
Twist the driveshaft counter clock wise to remove the prop.

Put a pipe wrench on the prop and stress hit it with some good hammer, check your intermediate shaft seal also. This is more likely to leak and cause cavitation

Looking down the driveshaft you need to turn the impeller right or clockwise, Like Mark44 said heat...and you need LOTS of it, I use a torch...you can pick them up and your local hardware store, I use an old mid-shaft with a pipe wrench rather then putting a wrench on the drive shaft but since your new to the sport you probable dont have once kicking around, but your going to need a big cheater bar (snipe) and LOTS of heat... In my experience you need LOTS of heat....Oh did I tell you you need LOTS of heat lol Good luck, its the most frustrating thing you'll ever do

Thanks everyone. I am going home tomorrow so I will see if I have any luck this time.

Claudefrog, I was going to use a dremel tool to try to smooth out the stator as best I can before going out and buying a new/used one.

you would probably get away with sand paper if you were just planning on cleaning it up a bit, drummel if you are planning on blueprinting it

Update: Thanks everyone for the help. I have been away for the past week but while I was gone I had the threads soaking in WD40. When I got back today, it took about three shock hits and it easily broke free. I was able to remove the washer but I am not sure how I am supposed to get the seals and bearings out. Do I use the hydraulic press, BAH, special tools, or something else? With the casing being aluminum I am trying not to be too forceful. Thanks everyone for the help

Dont put new bearings and seals in that stator, replace with used stator in better shape first.

(We have them for 50. With good vanes.)

I didn't want to but I think you are right the more I look at it. Is there a number I can contact you at or can you give me a call. Thanks, Kevin. 704-280-3737

I have a 20 ton press so that is not a problem. Which way do you press it out from, the side at the rear after the impeller or the end of the drive shaft that is closest to the engine? Thanks

Press from the front splines, bearings and shaft come out the back.

You just made 6 posts which qualifies you to be able to PersonalMessage JetManiac... the common way to contact him :)
