Filter was installed at the firewall with the clear top up and the arrow pointing towards the engine.

Arrow should be pointing towards the exhaust, that shows the flow of water. sounds like you have it backwards. Also, do you have it on the correct house?

On the correct hose and that’s what I meant towards the engine/exhaust

when I bought out carbon techs remaining jetski junk I got a bazillion of those filters, sold a bunch and still have a bunch. they were on their race boats that ran dry pipes to keep the jets from clogging. arrow always points towards direction of flow. even on backwards , its not going to cause overheating or restricted flow, its just not going to catch the crap in the designed spot. if the casting of the unit restricts the hose/nipple or flow, that can cause reduced flow and overheat.

If you run the ski strapped on the trailer in water you could also remove the outlet hose from the strainer and visually see if you have good flow...
