Custom/Hybrid Input on Gen3 BOB

There seems to be a fairly large group of guys on here from the DFW area with am hulls. I'm not sure about Houston, maybe the Austin area.

On PWCT there is a nice break down of rider groups by region. Maybe jump over there and stare asking around. It would def be worth a trip to ride some of these hulls. It is a big expense. Most peeps I ride with will let just about anyone ride their skis as long as they have stand up experience.

I had a BOB gen 2 and even though it was fun I thought it was a terrible rec ski, sucked for chasing boats or riding distance. It was a great flat water trick ski and would flip super easy but that where it ended for me. Used it to learn some tricks and let it go for a Rickter FR2, even though the Rickter is heavy it is more of an all around fun rider that would still do tricks plus it's gonna rock when I get it to the coast.
Good luck on your search.

I still like my gen3, but the Backie chan does a lot better for rec riding and boat chasing. I don't have problems, chasing down boats on it, but other people who ride my ski really struggle with it.

So far the chan has don't a lot better at speed and carving then the bob, but I don't have any reviews yet on how it does with flat water tricks. Still tuning the ski

Ive asked this question before as well and its super harx to decide with no AM experience. But i come from SN my whole life and only ridden other stock hull skis and my modded sn with tubbies, but soon will be trying out my buddys gen 3 and hope to like it. I think youl adjust like you said to whatever you get. But from all he pisitive reading ive read and geard, the chan seems like the way to go and soon i hope to ride one of those too. Just a tgought, you can always sell your hull and try something new if you dont like it at all.

I like the Gen3 lots. Im only 165lbs but i love the twitchyness of it yet still stable. I have very minimal time on the backie chan but will have more on it soon. I am a huge fan of the kdx now. I liked my xfr as well but the weight got to me. Its a long shot but if you want there is a freestyle contest at "the rat hole" in saskatoon saskatchewan on june 14-16. You are more then welcome to try my kdx and rokr and xj would probably let you try his gen3 and his backie chan and if wen shows up im sure he . Were going to be camping there so theres room if you need a place to crash. Just a way to try some hulls i guess.
but honestly if you put the time on any aftermarket hull i think you will learn to like them. Some are much better then chasing boats then others but it comes down to the rider and the ski. xj can rip his gen3 full throttle with an 888 in it. He can do it on any ski actually. I dont have the guts to do it but it shows that the rider makes a big difference. the kdx seems to do it all. I thought they where the ugliest ski made and now i own one and love it! try your best to test out what you can. Aftermarket skis are a very addicting and expensive hobby

for budget design and function: CHAN. I dont like the bobs functions. EX. adj. footholds, Look, price for what ur getting, they can and WILL pitch you off like a stepchild. I liked my rok but i thought it was terrible in the surf. I was always blind that nose digs in the waves before anything else. Call Steve i thinks he's working on a rec boat. MOST A/M HULLS ARE WIDER AND SHORTER THAN A SUPERJET. Width equals stability and the shorter length helps to make it more interactive. They respond better.

I agree. For now though, I bit the bullet and ordered a fiberglass gen3. I figure for my budget it's fitting, and if I don't like it I can always switch to a different hull later on. With my work schedule, there just wasn't gonna be any testing of skis for me considering no one near by has any to try. I'm just hoping the BOB will work out like I expect. I've been on a blaster 90% of the time for the past few years, due to our stand ups being out of commission, so any stand up for me is gonna be awkward.

I've always dug how the bobs looked, so hopefully I like the way they handle just as much. If not, I may just have to expand my collection :scratchchin: I figure that I'll just try and try. Practice makes perfect right?

Well, chasing boats isn't too much of a concern. Where I ride they stay in one part of the creek so I just hang out and wait.

My main concern now is the surf riding aspect. Galveston doesn't get big surf usually, but the few times it does I wonder how the bob will handle

This exactly. Having never ridden an AM hull, I think it's gonna be a learning curve either way. Lets hope the gen3 will turn out like I hope. If it doesn't, I can just sell and switch like you said.

zack bright put a (i think) glass bob in the surf last season. said it handled pretty well from what i recall. i dont see why it wouldn't really. if my gen2 wasnt a really light layup i'd consider putting it in the surf.

I'm hoping it'll work. My old 550 with no reinforcements lasted pretty long through the beatings. Worst that can happen is a few broken parts. Fiberglass is fixable though :bigok:

Hurricane tops Backie chan, ROk and gen3. But depending how you the ski to ride. BOB is strictly freestyle. ROK is freeride and Backie Chan is somewhere in between.

You must've had a lot of hulls and experience to type that post. Could you elaborate on the pros and con's of each stated hull in your opinion to better help the OP

I dont have a lot off experience with each Ive rode a gen3 and my friend has a hurricane. Hurricanes are much better than the gen3 but the gen3 is still a really really great hull that DK should always be making. Backie Chans are still awesome and from what i have heard never rode one. But the bottom deck is molded after a sxr so its gonna have really nice handling. The ROK hulls are a longer than the Backie Chan and i believe the gen3 and hurricane (not totally sure but 99% sure) Which is why i said above that the ROks would be more of a freeride hull. But that being said can still flip. I dont know what the ROKS were molded from or if they were. I believe Gen3s are 4,000 turfed and painted. 3500 for a Backie chan for ROK I dont know somewhere around there maybe less idk. For me its a toss up between a gen3 and a Backie Chan. Both are really great, but i can get the Gen3 for slightly less than a Backie Chan.
