Blaster Installing #Zero Flywheel

Hello,

I just ordered a lightened flywheel from #Zero for a '93 WaveBlaster with a 61x bottom end. Going to keep my stock flywheel as a backup.

Just curious what procedures should be followed to install the new flywheel?

I believe I've seen a thread in the past about "lapping" the new flywheel to the crankshaft before installing the key and bolt?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

I lap mine with valve grinding compound, then clean really well. I heat the flywheel taper up with a light bulb or propane torch then install. Oil the bolt and torque to 50-60ftlbs.

Thanks for the reply. How exactly do you do the lapping? Light pressure or firm? How many revolutions on the crankshaft, etc…?

I use light pressure to push the tapers together. I just spin back and forth until I see the taper surfaces look fully ground or close to it. It only takes a minute or two usually.

May be a dumb question but can someone explain lapping to me? I'm assuming your just putting an abrasive compound on the taper if the shaft and spinning the fly wheel on it to make a better fit? Thanks guys

You're correct.

I haven't lapped either and haven't had an issue. I usually clean the surfaces and install. But some time ago read that some engine builders are torquing to 70 lbs, and saw this again on another post a couple weeks ago. I've always torqued to 70 lbs without issues.
