Is Clymers right?

Clymers says to never reuse the circle clips inside a piston. I happen to have one brand new one, but would need one more. When I compare the old ones with the new one, I can't tell a difference. I'm thinking reusing them would be fine.

its a cheap part
it comes in every piston kit iv ever seen
when you pull them out they bend slightly most of the time comprimizing its Integrity
it "could" be reused most of the time, but the one time it wears out and grenades your engine....

why not just use a new one?

Because I have to order it, pay stupid high shipping for something tiny, and wait. I do agree with the "why take the chance" outlook though.

It may look the same, but they take a cyclical loading each time the piston comes to TDC and BDC. It stresses it in wone way and then the reverse. That leads to fatigue and failure. It also was probably bent a little when it was removed from the piston. I personally wouldn't chance it.

I also was always tole to put the opening either at the bottom or top. Never put it at 3 or 9 o clock position. Again this is because of the cyclical loading.

If it was a cheap engine you didn't care about, reuse it. If it is the engine you plan on ridding all summer long, buy a new one! Cheap out now, be broke down middle of summer!

if its not bent it'll get you by i reuse them all the time, unless you have the proper jig to install them i think they get a little stressed going in and out anyway..

Thats what I thought. I will stress it installing it about the same as taking it out. Unfortunately I broke a exhaust manifold bolt so I have to wait anyway. I'll go ahead and order another one. Is it a part I can get from mcmaster carr?

If you need to order one you should buy it from the manufacturer of the piston's you are using . It might be hard to order just a circlip, so don't throw the old ones away until you get a replacement. good luck

Does everyone think the Wisecos will be that much better than oem yamaha?

I think I could probably pick one oem up at the local yamaha dealer.

Its not really a matter of the circlip being better or worse,Wiseco circlips may actually be a different size wire,I only use Wiseco circlips in Wiseco pistons and oem circlips in oem pistons,I think ProX uses oem style clips and WSM Platinum series uses oem style clips,WSM std pistons use the funky circlips that you put in with circlip pliers.Hope this helps.
