Is it okay to cut/splice the wires coming from the stator?

I recently threw a rod in my FX1 and I'd like to take the 61x engine out of my square nose super jet and drop it in as a replacement. Is it okay to cut and splice the wires coming out of the stator? I can't see where there are any connections and it looks like they just go straight back to the ignition box. It would be much easier to cut the wires and install some crimp connectors than it would be to swap the stators.

Easiest thing is to open the e box and disconnect the wires. If you really want to cut and splice do NOT use normal crimp connectors. Solder the connections and use the good heat shrink with the glue inside.

You can make any terrible decision you like, and that would make the list.

Inside the e-box there are bullet connectors you can unplug. There is a reason for this. If you want to feed the electrical gremlins after dark, then yeah totally cut them.

Trust me I'm an expert at making terrible decisions. That's why I asked here first.

How do I get into the e-box? I've never had it out before and I can't see how it is attached to the hull.

Two nuts hold it to the hull. One on either side. Then, a crap load of screws on the back of the box allow you to split it. Make sure you use a big Phillips not a normal size or you will strip them. Usually u can reuse the rubber seal but if it’s damaged or there’s any sign of corrosion inside, replace it.

I have Ebox wire plugs on on several skis, they work great. You can pull an ebox out without removing the engine or you can pull an engine without removing the ebox. If I have a issue, I can even switch out an entire ignition system from a different ski in just a few minutes. Be sure to use a high quality weather proof connector.

Deutsch connectors work well for this. Make sure to get the proper crimp tool.

Oh okay I see it now. On the FX1 it looks like it's held in by three screws that go in through the back of the cargo compartment. I could see the two nuts on my square nose but I couldn't figure out how it was held in on my FX.

I have had no problems with the Deutsch connectors and I strictly rode salt for many years. Buy the highest quality tinned deutsch connector and crimp them correctly and use silicone grease to keep water out and they seal great never had an issue. I agree Not having an electrical coonnection is best so why not just remove the ebox together with the engine then reinstall with the rebuilt engine? taking apart the ebox might not be best option either.

I like using the clear bullet connectors and fill with silicone grease. You can see if there’s any corrosion with the clear connectors and just replace individually which ever one is corroded.

I run the deutsch as well in my sj for the last few years and haven't had any issues with salt. I did put them together with a healthy amount of di-electrical grease and spray it with fluid film before hitting the waves.

I'll chime in as well to promote deutsch connectors. I also fill them with dielectric grease and have never had any issues with them.

Are the deutsch connectors a lot different than the weatherpak? I was told weatherpak was great and I was very unimpressed.

Deutsch connectors are great. I used an authentic 6 pin for my stator wires and tried a 3 pair kit of cheap knock offs for the bilge pump and stop / start connectors. Honestly no noticeable difference in plastic or pin quality, the knock offs also came with some block off pins that would’ve been nice on the stator wires (5/6 pins used). Since the authentic ones didn’t come with block off pins, I just crimped on a short piece of wire to keep it sealed.

There’s 2 kinds of pins available, a round cylinder style and one that has fold over pins like spark plug terminals. I’m not buying the tool for the once in a blue moon I would need it. I buy the cylinder style, flux the wire, crimp it with a good set of regular crimps and then solder it. I haven’t had any issues on the ski or other applications I’ve used them this way. Always use a good bit of dielectric grease on the back, between the rubber grommet and pins, as well as in the pin area as well.
