Is leaded gas okay?

I've been running a 50/50 mix of 110 octane race gas from around here and 93 octane pump gas, and i was just filling up at the 110 octane pump and read that it is leaded gasoline? is all race gas leaded, or should i not be running this in a jet ski engine?

Leaded gas is fine for your ski, I run 100LL avgas which has a slightly higher lead content than race gas and have never had an issue.

110 is leaded as far as I know, its banned from street use, and when you read the pump it says somewhere on there "for off-road use only"

I forget what leaded gas used to do, it was just on tv a while ago, but I forget now... it was good, but then they swaped it out for something else that is half as good, or something.... I dunno.... where is the gasxpert?

lead was used as an octane booster and it supposedly helped prolongue the life of exhaust valve seats........ i think that was an after effect though ....... i think the main reason it was used was for the octane boosting properties...... but i may be wrong

In high population ares, environmentally speaking, I would discourage use of lead gas if you have an alternative, but if you live/ride in BFE I do not think it will do that much damage.

If a motor octane much above 100 is required there isn't much of a choice about lead. None of the unleaded fuels are very far above 100 octane.

i know at my shop we have to put hardened exhaust seats in old heads from like the 60's and 70's or they wear out with todays fuels. i THINK is has to do with cooling, the non hardened seats wear out really quick with no-lead gasoline. as far as 2-strokes, i cant see a problem. i dont run it so i dont know.

And actually, the LL is low lead.

Tetra ethyl lead was used in gasoline until 1975. Cars after 75 had catalytic converters to change the CO into CO2 and water. The lead will kill the converter and is toxic as we all know. I saw a documentary once where they took core samples from the Mississippi delta mud and they showed the increasing lead content of the mud up until 75 when it started to decline. Lead was used to increase octane but I think the primary function was to lubricate the valves. Like the post above said, you have to retro fit old motor heads with hardened valves and seats to run unleaded gas. I run a leaded 110 octane race gas from a local pump. It is labled "For Off Road use only" I know it is not race legal but for rec riding, no problem. I figure 5 gallons or so a week aint gonna cause me too much more brain damage:biggrin:

Right on...they call it "Low Lead", but it still contains lead. Low Lead for avgas, I suppose.

From everything I have ever heard leaded gas is actualy good for your motor. I think it helps in lubrication, but I may be wrong.

Leaded gas is for older cars and hasnt hurt any of my two strokes wat the lead does it lubricates and prolongs the life of the cyl walls seats pistons and wat, if you want to run leaded gas you can go to Canadian tire up here in canada dont no bout in the states and you can get a lead additive to mix in with the gas
