Is limiting rope needed with aftermarket pole

I am finishing up the last parts of the ski for the summer and didn't know if I needed a limiting rope with an aftermarket pole. I have an AC pole -4 inches (if that maters) and an X-metal bracket.

I done a search but couldn't find the answer.

I would definitely run one. The AC pole and xmetal bracket are definitely stronger than stock, but if you torque it really good you could possibly rip out the bracket or tear up the fiberglass a little.

It's a cheap mod that provides peace of mind and the best part is that if you make it yourself and make it strong enough it can double as a tow rope so you don't have to wear a tow rope around your waist or worry about forgetting to bring the tow rope cuz it's always on the ski.

As far as what length to make the rope and bungee material I would do the following:

-Make the rope long enough to where when it is fully stretched out there is about 4-6 inches more of travel before the handlepole maxes out.

-I would then make the bungee material short enough to where when the rope is fully extended the bungee cord is actually being stretched so that it will act as a shock absorber.

The way I have mine set I have never fully extended it. The bungee cord acts as a shock absorber and never lets the rope fully extend.

Re: limiting rope

I just added a blowsion limiting rope to my ski. i have an AC -2 alum. pole with the stock bracket. if you are a freestyle rider, then the answer is yes. the limiting rope prevents hyperextension. although bending or denting your alum. pole is highly unlikely, you could break through the fiberglass where your bracket is bolted to the ski if you hyperextend hard enough. the limiting rope is just a cheap way to insure that your ski doesn't get damaged. $39.95from Blowsion.com or if you really feel like it, make your own. it's very simple to install.

I noticed at the Joe Kenney Daytona ride that Paul (LPW) doesn't run a limiting rope. I asked him about it and he said that he's never ran one on his current ski and has had no trouble with cracking. He's running and X-metal and I'm sure that theres a decent amount of reinforcement under the pole mount area. I think I'm going without one too on my new ski. It's a cleaner look and one less thing to fool with.

I agree. For an experienced rider like Paul I don't seem them as being AS necessary.

I myself am in the process of learning to barrel roll so mine has come in handy a few times.

There are two things I don't like about the Blowsion besides the price:

1. It's not very strong at all so you can't use it as a tow rope.

2. It is setup so that it wraps around the hood latch instead of clipping into a designated mounting location.

I made mine for about $12 and it has much stronger stainless steel carabiners and I designed it so that I can quickly remove it if I am in the surf and need a tow.

I have had a limiting rope for the past 5 years but I don't think I have really used it in the past 3 years. I remember bottoming it out a few times but after that I can't remember using it.

I don't "like" a limiting rope they get in the way and something you have to remove to get under the hood. I also don't like the carabiners slapping around on the paint since the paint cost more than a bigbore kit.

I might try to run without one for a while as I try to figure out how to build one that looks good and has function without harming the paint.

helps stop your ski from opening all the way up and your ski getting 90 degrees to the surf when youre in the air (thats a CRAPPY feeling if youre not doing a ball buster)

That is where I built my last limiting rope to stop right as it reached full lock. In fact you could lock the pole up with the stock pole keeper with the limiting rope attached. I built it solid enough that flex wasn't an issue. 250 pound rated horse bridal and braided steel cable.

I guess I will run it as it is and I can always fix the fiberglass and build a limiting rope if needed... LOL

Since when have you started sporting a tow rope? :lightning: :haha:

:haha: That's the only thing that sucks about relying on your limiting rope as your tow rope. When you ride someone else's blaster(cough cough:biggrin: ) and it takes a crap on you in the middle of the break at Daytona you don't have a tow rope cuz your tow rope is on your ski.:banghead:

Thanks again Mark. Do you still have a scar from the rope? I've still got a really nasty scar on my shin.

Dude that oozing jank on you shin was nasty. I've gotten my fair share of scars since tangling myself up in that rope. All orthoscopic :crutches: I think I had the ortho stuff coming to me anyways....

On topic, yes run a limiting rope! You'll know when and if you need to ditch it.

Quik question to add...on my UMI pole there is a threaded hole, not sure what it is for. If you are looking from the bottom up at the steering mount it is on the lower left hand side, can i use that hole to mount the limiting rope???
