Waves in the gulf can vary. When the waves are small it is not much different from a lake. I rode in Destin, FL and it was an amazing ride location. Get in that water as soon as possible...you have more chance of dying in a car wreck on the way to the beach than by a shark. Least of your worries. Make sure electrical system is perfect. The salt will find flaws.

Ya if your not chumming or spear fishing it is very hard to get bit although I've seen a couple guys with a torn up leg and ankle surfing .

Sharks no issues at all on the Texas Gulf there are bull sharks that will grab some guy fishing and take a bite
Jelly Fish, Cabbage heads, and those pesky purple things with long stingy tentacles. That's what you need to be aware of .If there out wear a wetsuit

When in doubt, Throttle-out.
First steps... I have to get a new safe tank, as well as a PFP and ADA head... Then I'll feel like I can stomp those crocs and cotton-mouth (poisonous) water snakes.

Just don't float around as if you were bait for too long.
I'm more afraid of the fresh-water "brain-eatin' amoeba" than I am of sharks.
When you see one, simply go the other way. (a shark, that is. Amoeba are hard to see)
And you will see one. And for each one you see there are many, many more. Like cock-roaches. Especially near inlets where the riding is best, it's also the best feeding area for sharks, and a lot of other things.
I've cautiously run away from a few at Matanzas. The biggest was a tiger approx. 13' long in 8' of water. (estimated length by about 9' between dorsal and tail fins).
You're not what they are there to eat. Don't look or act like food and you will likely be fine.

If you want safe come and ride in the UK....Apart from the odd turd floating around your good

I don't know about that! Two English dudes on Facebook recently destroyed their skis because they were "Jetski jousting." I was surprised and perhaps even a little delighted to learn that jousting is still alive in the old country.
