Super Jet Is this a bad coil?

I have been having this problem intermittently the past 2 weeks. Here is a video of what it sounds like

The first time it happened I went to pull the plug wire and the terminal ripped out of the boot. I figured that was the problem. I ghetto spliced in a new boot end, taped it up, and I got an hours ride out of it before it started happening again. I thought I had just done a crappy job, so I dug out the wires from the coil and replaced the wires, gluing them in with 5 minute epoxy.

I had a hard time figuring out which wires to use and not use.

I used this wire to replace both wiresphoto(1).jpg

Now I have access to this wire photo.jpg

So I'm willing to dig out the yellow wire and try again.

I'm not sure if the wires I chose mattered...or if I just have a bad coil?

Little update. I forgot to mention the thing starts and idles normally. I pulled the wire that I originally thought the trouble started with. The ski wouldn't start. Then I put it back on and took the other wire off. The ski started right up and ran on one cylinder. And it DID NOT sound like the video above.

So now I'm leaning heavily towards bad coil.

It could be the coil but it doesn't sound like its firing on one cylinder, more like a very bad misfire. Try changing the coil and take a look and see if the heat sensor is still connected on top of the head, it maybe this is faulty.
Chris.

I
just disconnected the heat sensor from head and it is still doing it. Do I need to disconnect it inside the ebox as well in order to fully bypass it?

so, with one wire off it sounds the same? If so, bad coil.

If not, sound like it could be going into 'limp' mode with a f'd up heat sensor....i've never heard a ski sound like that.

Unplugged the pink wire running to heat sensor pickup, started it, and no change. I now have access to a different coil I'm going to try next

When the wire I originally thought was the problem is off, say wire A, it sounds like in the video. But with that wire connected and the other wire, B, off it sounds nothing like the video and (i'm guessing) what it "should" sound like firing on one cylinder. It revs according to throttle response like normal. But when both wires are connected or just wire A connected it acts like the video. Hope that makes sense..

Now I know it's not the coil, its not the ground cable, and its not a bad heat sensor. Not sure where to go next:thinking:

The problem is totally intermittent but eventually always happened every ride and also on the trailer since the first incident.

I messed with the carb screws a bit and its very responsive to small turns. I"m thinking of just tearing in to it anyways at this point.

Should I go down the line with the ebox and try a different cdi next?

I'm having the same issue right now I think, at lease it sounds the same. I have replaced my stator 3 times every time I do I get about 3 hours of ride time before it craps out again. I need to try to replace my coil and cdi next.

MCrider try draining your gas tank. I was advised to do this by djkorn and now I cannot recreate the problem! I think I may be good to go.

A quick update: I've left fuel selector switch on reserve for a couple days now and have not recreated the problem since. This might be it. So this would mean the switch on "on" mode was restricting fuel?

Doesn't make sense to me because plugs were really dark and wet.

thats a CDi issue. its hitting a low rev limit. disconnect the white with red stripe wire. this is the pulser coil. beware this is what reads your rev limiter so without it you can rev to the moon.

if it revs fine after that, its a bad CDI. if it doesnt, start testing resistance (ohms) of the coils in the flywheel.

and never glue plug wires in, always twist and leave them. also never run a ski without a spark plug sparking in the boot. you will blow your coil if you do. if it hasnt happened, your lucky so far.

and you leaving it for a few days tells me you might have moisture in it.

Ok, I'll keep that in mind, but since changing fuel selector to reserve the problem hasnt occurred. Also the sound wasn't consistently like it was in that video. Sometimes it would be faster, slower, or vary in it's frequency.

Well its not fuel selector. CRJ I hope you are right. I'm borrowing a friends spare cdi to try tomorrow. After that it's carb rebuild time but have to wait till next week to order.

And if it aint carb or cdi then I DONT KNOW what to do.

So far: New plugs, check fuel lines and tank vent, Rebuilt coil, tried then bought a friends extra coil, disconnected heat sensor, drained gas, tried reserve on fuel selector.

It's not the cdi...

I think its a bad diaphragm in carb. I can recreate the problem by adjusting the high speed screw on trailer. Eventually it happens. So the next thing I do is a carb rebuild.

LMAO I get one more chance! I took the old one out then put it right back in.
