So after 7 yrs I decided to start back up again..picked up an older gp 800 for motor and pump...took it out to make sure all was well before I cut it apart. It runs good out of water but wont under load, will get up on plane but then bogs down and wont go anyware....stop open hood...close hood gets back up on plane and then bogs out again...just tryin to make sure im not wastin money on a bum motor or if its something im over looking...

Sounds like an exhaust leak

So there's exhaust fumes/smoke present when you pop the hood? As per previous poster, symptoms suggest an exhaust leak.

Those side draft carbs internal filters clog up. Buddy had a xl800 and the one carb was 80% clogged and the other 100% clogged. Saved his motor actually, since an oil line was off. He also bought it used and had similar symptoms first run,
