Jet Pilot's Jet Waves.

I saw a vid of Herbie bomb dropping on a 440 from the back of a huge closeout and breaking his back from the impact. That dude was touched!

that was one of the first surf riding clips i ever saw when i got into the sport. i've always been leery about flying off the backside since. even though that wave and my waves are quite different.

There was a great photo of Herbie coming down the face of a massive wave in the magazines in the early 90s, I think it was an Ocean Pro ad. I saw that and thought "that's what I want to do!" The little bit of ocean riding in Jet Dreams and a few tour stops back then got me interested too. I never saw Jet Waves, if I did I probably would've been even more into surf riding.

It's amazing Scott Watkins didn't get on a superjet back then and immediately switch from the 550.

Such an amazing vid.Its crazy how they do that on a 550!Just like someone else stated earlier in the thread how they dont have straps or footholds.

Actually in that video Watkins was seen shredding on a 650 sn, an early 750sx as well as the 550. He was at home on all 3. One of the most impressive things about that vid! I bumped into him at our hotel in Daytona last year and I acted like a starstruck little mush.

I still got that vid stashed away somewhere at home. I used to watch it over and over back then. Awesome. I never did like the soundtrack though especailly after watching Crusty Demons of Dirt. That would get me pumped!

True that. But the crusty 1 soundtrack wouldn't fit the vibe of Jet waves. They were not burning stuff up and showcasing strippers. I like both videos on their own merits. All My crazy friends tried to meld these elements together and it wasn't bad. Live fast and die fat could have been good if I could have seen somebody stick their landing once in a while. Everybody seems to be trying too hard to be "extreme" these days...

also its a shame that with so much focus on jumping out the back of the wave and doing flips, other than a few guys none of the "pros" can surfride a sixteenth as good as Watkins was 20years ago on equipment that didnt even compare to what we ride now..doing one styleless "slash" per wave and going out the back half the time isnt the same as cranking a solid bottom turn on a 550 and boosting a reentry and lading back on the open face then slapping the lip a few more times for good measure..if more guys could ride like that and combine that with their flip tricks i think it would make the sport way more enjoyable for viewers and it is never boring because in between the jumps guys would be blasting lips and getting critical nonstop instead of adjusting their feet in their footholds and riding around in circles waiting for a launch ramp...surfers also might despise us less as well...no surfer could watch Watkins shred in that video and think its lame

Bingo, just look at :29 and :55 seconds in: he comes off the lip and is immediately looking down the wave to see plan his next move.

When I was in Hawaii, I would watch that vid almost every day and rode 4-5 times/week on my 550, pure heaven.

thanks for those great clips. I think if you live where there are no waves unless there is a storm you make use of every last bit of a wave if you can.

amen!

i think footholds have ruined the sport. locked in idling around waiting to bust the next backflip = no surf riding expression

ok, maybe ruined the sport is going a little far :tomato:

less work more surf
This is proof you dont need 120+hp and 1000cc for surf riding! Prob helps that the ski is WFO the hole time! Watkins is so super smooth, makes me want to go riding now and its 10 pm pitch black in the middle of winter! All I have wanted to try is pull off a back flip but now All I want to do is shred up some waves even 5% as smoooth as that and I will be happy!

Yup awesome!

What..., do I see a Kawi in the surf........ :mischievous:

I got started in '88. Purchased Jet Dreams and studied it for years. Scott 'Hollywood' Watkins has been inspirational. He is definitely the man!
