They do look lean, yes, but plugs can take a while to color up depending on how new they are and the oil/fuel mix you are using. You need to approach this the way Mikuni reccommends because it works.

If you don't tune in the right order, you'll find that you'll be chasing your tail trying to sort another problem out when you do fix that pesky midrange bog. Honestly, it will take you less time to tune the way Mikuni says than it would to try to troubleshoot an existing problem.

If you have a good range of jets and springs, you should be able to get your boat spot on in about an hour if everything else is in order.

It's probably just me, but I can't tune by plug color. I prefer to tune by how the engine runs at various throttle positions.

Basically what I'm wondering is am I going to be ok if I run it like this for now?

I just don't want to worry about burning up a top end. I do a compression check every other time I go out and look at the tops of the pistons.

I really have absolutely no time right now to spend tuning it and right now I am pretty happy with how it hits. The bog is very slight and occasional so it's something I can deal with. I know I can probably get more out of it if I spend the time tuning it, but right now I just want to make sure I'm not going to burn up a top end and have fun riding when I get the chance (I am rarely ever WOT by the way).

Every time I do a compression test each cylinder is at exactly 185 psi and has never dropped since I started building up this motor.

I would recommend making the time to do the tuning. You could be on the edge of serious problems. All it could take is some inferior fuel (which is not a stretch at all with the presence of ethanol in it today) and a few seconds longer at high rpm to manifest itself:lightning: . It is ALOT easier to spend a couple of hours tuning than several rebuilding. Plus after rebuilding you're going to have to tune anyway to avoid having the problem reoccur.
