JM781 Big Bore w/ carbs

Purchased a "JM/Blue 781 Big Bore" from Chris aka JetManiac

It was a big purchase for me, but the value seemed to line up with my budget vs larger motors that would require an addtional $1 in carbs, or exotic ingntion.

Value 5 out of 5
Performance 4 out of 5
Customer Service 5 out of 5

I found that I was constantly wrenching on my 61x 701 for one reason or another. As a fellow rider says riding > wrenching.

I'll try to keep this short, but the gist is that I ordered the motor from Chris, and asked that he include a pair of freshened up 38mm carbs (his suggested size) and a intake, gaskets etc. The carb part of the equation was the biggest value IMO. I think I paid $400 extra for the carbs complete. But to have nice clean fresh carbs that were already tuned within a half turn of the adjustment screws was so nice.

Aside from the carbs, the basic package is a brand new short block, new(reman?) crank/ rotating assembly, 62T Cases, 61x Cylinder bored out) and freestyle ported by "Blue" a member here also from FL. Also includes ADA girdled head and flywheel cover, stainless hardware, all new seals and gaskets.

I supplied ignition, flywheel, starter, exhaust, coupler, etc. (that I painted)

The motor shipped (painted in the color requested at small additional charge) in a well padded box. I don't recall the lead time from when I placed the order. It seemed a little long but i'm impatient so that can be taken with a grain of salt.

Communication was great up front, updates were a little slow during production. Once received Chris was outstanding at fielding questions that could not be answered in his instructions/ break in documents. Very happy overall with the purchase.

Speaking of, the motor shipped with a very specific document that lined out how to break in the motor, what ratio of gas to use, when to adjust the carbs etc. It was very helpful.

I prefer limiting power for the sake of reliability, for that reason I do not run total loss, race gas, etc. My motor has a Enhancer, 91 octane domes (37cc I think, measured 200psi last time I checked.) I haven't had to mess with my motor once for any reason since it was built. That equates to value IMO... A durable trouble free motor.

It is powerful, the power is very linear, it doesn't have that rubber band/ light switch power band like some motors i've been on. It has a nice low end hit and pulls nicely through the power band. I don't use a tach so I can't comment on specifics.

One note: When I first installed this in my RN SJ, I was a little let down about the increase in power over the 61x it replaced. Once I put the same engine in my Carbon/Kev Backie Chan, it felt like a monster. Which at the end of the day means it feels and hits like a monster and it runs and runs and runs.....

I would absolutely recommend this motor and JM to another member

I also have the JM 781 but I am running dual 44's. I would agree with pretty much everything you said. I had to dial in my carbs, but once I did I havent had to touch the motor minus a sheared flywheel key caused by a junk A/M started I used to get me on the water for a show.

Overall, Anyone looking for nice budget friendly power Id highly recommend this motor. Fit and finish is outstanding, price is amazing, and Chris is an awesome guy to work with. Also keep in mind this motor can be upgraded to the New 828cc with nothing but a crank, custom domes, and some bigger carbs.

What were your jetting specs with 44's? I couldnt get mine dialed on 44's. Also how does the power compare to with 38's?

Main Jet = 115 H
Pilot Jet = 120 L
Needle/Seat = 2.0
Spring = 95
Pilot screw = adj 1.5 turn out
Main Screw = adj 1.5 turn out

I havent ran the 38's I have a set but need to rebuild and the motor ran so good on the 44's, I haven't felt like messing with it.

Cool. I was just wondering if they give it a peakier powerband or not. Thanks though.

Mine has the oem sleeves on the last bore (84mm), carbs are 38s, 61x lightened flywheel, msd enhancer, b pipe. It hurts feelings on the reg. Sips fuel too... 45min+ ride time with an 8.5liter tank.

I've only put few hours on mine but she's treated me well so far

These are essembled very well n wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

i wanted to upgrade my motor n was on a budget. With this motor I was able to swap right over my supporting mods. If I had gone with a much larger aftermarket motor I would wanted/needed to upgrade those supporting mods...

i dont think dyno's will be.... great. every one ports different. everyone wants power in a different area. different people use different jetting. so your numbers will be all over the place. unless you just want to say, "who makes to biggest numbers".
NOW, powermouse VS. a JM781 isnt a good comparison. the powermouse is a stroker. i believe blue and jetmaniac are working on lining up some stroker motors, then you'll have something to compare to the powermouse.

Dyno would be perfect. Each builder builds "their" free ride engine with there porting etc with the only thing in common being that they have to use the same Octane fuel. Depending on the dyno it should print out a graph showing the power curve as well.

Then we can break each builders engine down to Dollar per HP cost. Yes, Jetmaniac's engine is "only" a 781 but it also cost less.

It cost less because it's a licoriceing stock stroke. Let Jetmaniac build you a 4 mil motor. Then do SAME carbs intake, compression, fuel and ignition. Your comparing apples to tennis shoes. You can't compare it just because the cc's are the same. A 4mil 760 or whatever it is can/will hit harder than a SS850. Depending on setup.

Did you read my post at all? They don't have to be same. This way we can see cost per HP.
