Hey guys, first time posting here and was hoping to get some advice on my ski I picked up a few weeks ago. One of my dad's old jet skiing buddies had an bone stock 87' JS 550 sitting in his boat house that hadn't been started in probably 10 years; guy couldn't ride it anymore after hurting his knees. I pulled the engine apart and put new crank seals in it, new gaskets everywhere, new clear fuel lines, and rebuilt the fuel pump. First time trying to start it, it took me probably 20 minutes to get it started but it ran great after a few small carb adjustments. Since then it still takes me probably 20 minutes to get the dang thing to just try to start. To simplify things, I disconnected the selector switch and ran the fuel line from the reserve port on the tank to the water separator and then to the carb. Returning fuel goes to the rev limiter and then back to the tank; capped off the ON port. Primer T-junction is after the rev limiter. Applied pressure to the tank via the check valve (the check valve is working) but air/fuel hisses out around the carb pump fuel input cover. Is air/fuel suppose to come out around this cover? I noticed after running around the lake that fuel leaks from this area as well. Has a brand new seal from the rebuild kit purchased from SBT, the cover is tight, and doesn't seem to be cracked. Thinking this is probably the reason for the excessive start time. Any ideas? Thanks!
