300/440/550 JS550 Port Questions

It looks (to me) that the cylinder in your picture is at TDC.
Nope. Bdc. I put the one cylinder on there, and took the other rod and pulled till it wouldnt pull anymore. Plus, tbe piston was also reating on the crankcase. I checked. 100% positive its bdc

You want the exhaust port perfectly smooth and polished, and the transfer ports smooth but with a light texture to them(at least that's how the cylinders I just got back from porting were done)

Thanks rosie what bout intake

Why do the ports have to be that way? I thought the intake had to be smooth to prevent from gas and oil from building up in there. Also i thought the exhaust had to be rough so it picked up any carbon deposits. Can anyone prove my reasoning wrong?

You have it exactly backwards. Intake is rough, transfer ports opened up a bit and smoothed but with a rough surface (like smooth grit sand paper) and polish the exhaust ports till theyre like mirrors. When you think the exhaust ports are smooth enough....theyre not.... keep going smoother. Like perfectly spit shined boots. I start with sanding rolls on a straight die grinder, then go to the rough side of emery cloth, then the back side of emery cloth, then to 320 grit cloth, work my way up in grits to the 1500 - 2000 mark. Then finish it off with bits of micro fiber and simichrome polish.

Do some research on gasket matching to.
