Xpress boats was put jet ski motors in one of there boats ??? when we went to the plant to pick some new boats up we saw it , we ask one guy about it and he said there where to yamahas in it it was a 21 ft flat bottom he would not let us go look at it ? but he did say it would not turn worth a ******** with it being a true flat bottom and two yamahas I can see why !! but he would not tell us much more about it?? I bet it would have been a cool ride with a littil mod.

I got my wife searching through pictures right now trying to find my "flounder pounder" boat. I cut a kawsaki 750sx in half at the fire wall (not real sure what to call it), bolted it to the back of a 14 foot jon boat and set the motor inside. I loved that thing, especially when other boats tried to follow me through the thin water. I abandoned it because it was so loud. I had airboat style steering and skegs riveted to the side of the boat to help turning. Mine was definately not as nice as yours, but a ton of fun. It would go anywhere you see water. Even if it was just 6 inches deep.

OK - I picked up a used Carolina Skiff this weekend - soon to be on the chopping block.

what ski hull should I use for a donor? I have an extra SN hull...or should I look for a VXR or another couch that had a reverse on it?

OK - question -

what yamaha skis used a 61X motor (and has a reverse bucket) that I can use for a donor?

Or - could I just use the square hull I have for the donor, and find a reverse bucket from one of the PWC salvage places?

which pump did the VXR use? I have an extra pump (needs driveshaft, though)

ok, so in retrospect....if you were going to do it ALLLL over again..would you choose a 701 platform or something different?

alright dude - I bought a J16 today.

got any more (and larger) pics of your build? Tips, tricks? What would you do differently?

The one I bought has damage to the bottom I have to repair before I get into the conversion.

if you have any additional photos, can you email them to:*******?

thanks!

I don't have anymore pics, but if you need pics a certain area when you get into your project, let me know and I'll take some pics for you.

As far as what would I do different, well....there's a couple things:

1) I would do a better job! I did this as an experiment to see if it was a sound concept with the intent of making a larger one (21'-24') someday. If I knew it would be as cool as it is, I would've done the deck/storage compartments differently. I simply used pressure treated plywood and put a coat of glass/gell coat on it. I would probably use a glass/core/glass process if I were to do another. I would also incorporate a drainage lip around all the compartment openings to make them watertight.

2) pick a donor ski with a reverse mechanism...that will save you fabricating one.

3) design some sort of access hatch on the top of the pump tunnel so you could remove debris if you had to. I've been lucky and never had a problem, but just one plastic bag and you'll be snorkling to remove it!

Even as it is it's freaking awesome though! I'm just being very honest about what I would change.

some questions -

1. Do you have a source or product name for the glass/core/glass? I found a couple of products, but they were close over $500 for a 4x8 sheet. I did find this: http://www.diabgroup.com/americas/u_products/u_prods_4.html - looks like it would work well, but is only 2'x4'

2. What do you mean by "access hatch to the pump tunnel"? Do you mean a hatch through the floor to that area - or through the actual pump tunnel itself? Seems like that would be asking for a leak to do that.
