In 1994 I bought a new Yamaha Wave Raider. It was a new model for Yamaha, 80HP twin carb 701 sit-down. Fast ski for the time, 53mph
It was the purple fiberglass hull that was lighter than the future generations of Wave Raiders.
The front of the hull was shaped just like an old pair of wooden water skis. Any chop or waves and it slapped the water as opposed to cutting thru it. It was great compared to previous Wave Runners, but looking back it was the worst riding sit down I ever had. It was however great to work on, unlatch the seat and slide it back and the whole engine hatch opened up.
53 mph wasn't fast enough, so I bought a prop, then a head and rideplate. Then a pipe. I was up to 59 mph and the handling was so sketchy. Lean the wrong way going fast and it would start to lean and there was no coming back from it. It was like crashing in slow motion, you knew you were going over when it started to lean.
At 59 mph no one could beat me, the Kawasaki 750ss skis thought they were faster because of the bigger motor, but I passed them easily.
Then the came out with the 1100 Raider. I needed more MPH because they ran almost even with me, so I sent my cylinder to Group K for porting. Didn't work, Harry was great to work with, but the porting for the 701 SJ's just didn't work on new Raiders. He sent me a replacement cylinder, which went on the shelf and I bought a Riva ported one. A prop tweak and jet changes and I was at 62 mph.
One of the only photos of my new Raider with my nephew sitting on it and my dad in the background.
Had a lot of fun with that ski until 1997, when I bought a new GP 1200. I'll save that ski story for later.
