Keihin carb question

What is this for? The originals were capped but when I got the carbs back from being rebuilt the caps are off.

Limiter caps to keep customers from jacking with the carb settings , I never put those back on when I take them off , Yamahas also had them on the sitdown watercraft and some Yamaha's and Kawasaki's had the low speed adjusters hidden under brass plugs, you had to drill through the brass plugs then tread a self tapping screw into them to remove the plugs, I had a small slide hammer I made for doing exactly that and a long drill bit with a stop on it so when you drilled through the plug you didn't hit the low speed adjuster.

That nipple is where oil is injected. Switching to pre-mix wont change jetting requirements on these carbs. They have an internal spring loaded ball to prevent air from entering but the nipples should also be capped when not in use. Keihins had a plastic cover/limiter pressed on the low and high speed adjusters that can be easily removed.

Yeah it would help if he hadn't circled the whole damn area , I would have thought the oil injection nipple to be self explanatory, I guess this is Facebook now.

Well......some of us have been in the game a long time. BUT,..as much as it pains us, there will continue to be newbies. And most of these newbies are now coming from a generation with absolutely zero mechanical or trade skills whatsoever. They just were never taught any diy skills like all of us older guys were. Remember dad yelling about where you were pointing the flashlight? LOL!!

I like how the guy blatantly answered the question wrong because he didn't really look at the picture, exactly like the people on Facebook often do, then complained about Facebook people.

Also in that pic are the low speed adjusters, he mentioned something was capped off , when he got the carbs back they were not capped off , now if I had rebuilt the carbs I would have pulled off those caps, pulled the adjusters out inspected and cleaned everything , putting it back without the caps , that is where my mind went , my bad ,
when it's open for interpretation then you have to interpret it , I did , this time I was wrong , it's happened before , it will happen again , get over it !

I have never had any real issues with Kehin carbs , well except for on one ski , a 650SX I worked on from a customer , it was running rich, I rejetted it and it ran fine, the next year It did the same thing again, at that poit I told him to stop messing around with it and put a 44 Mikuni on it , we did that and he has been very happy with it ever since ,I am at a loss as to why that particular carb kept richening up , I have seen it before on a Honda motorcycle with a Kehin carb but never on a watercraft engine before.

I had a Keihin once on a 750ss that didn't run right even after a rebuild. I went through that thing with a fine tooth comb and COULD NOT find an issue. I put the new guts in an old parts carb I had and it ran like a champ. My only guess was a crack INSIDE the carb body somewhere which left metering fuel impossible.

It's amusing to me that jet ski guys bash keihin while the two stroke dirt bike crowd removes mikuni flat slides and replaces them with pwk's. That said all of my tunning parts are mikuni so I've never really run a keihin myself so I guess I'm right there with them.

Keihin made a good 38 and 42 for the aftermarket in the early to mid 90s. They didnt sell as well as the Mikuni 44 and 46 so keihin dropped out. Kawasaki used Keihin as an OEM carb through the mid 90s. There is nothing wrong with a pair of OEM Keihins on a 750 except for the price of repair parts.

Just an FYI.....the Keihin rebuild kits from SBT are actually very nice kits, even for the CV carbs! I literally just did a whole set an a '95 Zxi900 and it runs out great!

No bashing going on here but BTW the XR200 I had the Kehin rich running issues with , I replaced it with a 28 Mikuni flat slide, set the needle to the correct position, adjusted the air screw and the idle and I never touched that carb again.

I agree the Red and Blue Kehins were great carbs , I had a set on my 550SX , they always ran great and they ran way better than the dual 38 Mikuni's I pulled off of it , they just don't have the adjustability that the Mikluni's do though , if you know how to tune Kehins you can make them run really well. .
