I'm realizing that most guys will switch out the stock carbs on the kawi 1100 w/ mikunis but I didn't and now it goes wot when I start up.
I haven't even broken in the engine yet but this is new for me. Looking for ideas when l get back to it in the morning. Research tells me either an air leak, maybe an oil injection cap popped off?? These are stock cdk 2 with a/m FA. I have a oil block plate installed on stator as well.
Do they make rebuild kits for these old carbs or should I upgrade. I need to feel this 1100 before summers end.

If it goes to wot when you start it, most likely it's an air leak. From what i understand, the cdk2 is comparable to an sbn. I run one on my 550/650 conversion. The issue is, oem keihin kits are expensive. It was around $70 when I bought my kit.

I'm probably to blame b/c right before, I launched @ the ramp and felt like a slug going through the no wake. Once beached I realize my plugs were switched. She was really laboring, like my impeller was full of sea weed.
Figured if I have to pull carbs and inspect wouldn't it make sense just to rebuild , even for 70 or whatever it costs

Where should I look if an air leak is suspected? In carbs themselves ? The intake ? I'm new to rebuilding / working on them but can do with some guidance

Carbs to intake/Intake to cases. (where the gaskets are)

Also make sure you have a good amount of fuel in the tank.

Fuel is 3/4 full w/ a 36:1 mix. The engine was just re-honed and checked by CPT. I have no history as this was a CL purchase but got a clean bill once opened and inspected.
The carbs , now who knows when/if they were last serviced

keihins are fine, just rebuild them
but it sounds like an intake manifold leak or similar

I pulled the F/A's and nothing obvious but i noticed throttle flaps aren't shut fully. I'm guessing that's for idle.
So from here I guess pull carbs, rebuild , and change all gaskets is the first step.

Well this was a learning experience. Once carbs were out of the ski I was able to see my idle screw was way hi. Problem solved.
I always think the worst right away - after researching air leak all I could envision was having to pull the engine (just opened and checked) and replace crankseals. Btw I've never been inside an engine so who knows how that woulda worked out.
Final note - this 1100 hauls ass @ 1/2 throttle !! still breaking her in. Can't wait to unleash her!

I'm starting a total rebuild . All carbs are still together on the rack. Will it be easier if they're separated?

I started with the mag carb and it has what I think is the accelerator pump(ap). I've removed all screws on covers(carb/accell.) but its still attached by the adjustment screw behind the ap. Can I note the screw setting, back it out and be able to separate the cover? SBT guides I've found don't cover this and I don't want to eff anything up I don't have to.

edit: maybe this should move to driveline??
