Surfriding Kicked out of water at Daytona

So went out to Daytona Yesterday, around noon. Checked 4 sites on weather and 2 for tide info b4 we left. everything said clear past 1 pm, and 3 ft waves.

SO........get to daytona around 1:30 pm. Overcast, rain, 30+ Mph winds, waves Breaking around 7 FT!

Got the Ski in for about 5 min and 3 beach patrol F-150's show up lights on sirens and everything. and the "closed the beach" however like 500 feet down there are guys surfing......... and they didnt say anything.

yea yea i know it was for my own good. but still atleast apply the rules equally to everyone.

and the 5 min in that Surf was worth the hour drive.

Can they arrest you if you went in? Pretty sure the law does not say surfers are the only ones allowed in the water when the beach is deemed unsafe.

There was a Small craft advisory yesterday. The jet ski zone closes when those are in effect. Next time if you want to know ahead of time, you can first check this website.

http://www.srh.noaa.gov/hazards/?wfo=mlb

Then you can call Beach Patrol and ask to see for sure. Sometimes they close it, sometimes they dont.

Also, sometimes they will close it when a Hazardous Weather Outlook has been issued. This is not the same as a small craft, so you can argue with them. it happens all the time and they will usually figure out their mistake and open it. yes, it seems like a pain. But when you show up ready to ride, it is really easy. haha. its best to have a way to show them weather report when you get there too.

So glad we don't have a beach patrol like that when and where we ride in lake Michigan.

I bet that five minutes was fun.

Were you riding alone? Or with a buddy on a second ski?

We were "advised" not to go out once and we went anyway with no problems. I am shocked shocked shocked that they can kick you out of the ocean!!!!! I think you could have told them you were fine and to leave you alone, no?

Yes, it is a pain. You need to check for high winds and check NOAA site like Ken said.

The beach patrol aren't closing the ocean or usually even the beach. They are closing the 'jet ski zone' which has its own rules. You can always go launch at Ponce inlet and ride there when the zone closes.

Also, I dont know what sites you are checking but all the forecasts I saw called for some decent surf with lower winds in the a.m., but showing big winds and worse weather for the pm.

I was at the beach in Daytona yesterday and it was nasty looking. Not really worth the effort to try and ride. There were surfers in the water but no one was really catching any waves. Wind was strong and even stronger today. not worth the costs of fuel to ride.
