AVI files are preferred (for high quality), but anything that will play on a DVD player will work along with hi-8 tapes or VHS tapes.
Just make sure you put the settings on highest quality.

This is definitely an awesoem idea DJ, cant wait for it. I just hope you have like a 5 tb hard drive to do all of this. Its gonna be huge. Oh and I'll see what kind of crazy footage I can get for you from the Jersey Shore.
