after some research I bought one a couple of nights ago for my mom to be her internet device. The people I've talked to with them are very impressed.

Check out the Nook Tablet, similar specs, SD card storage, I think bigger HD. There are some websites that compare them and the Nook comes out slightly ahead but is $50 more.

If you are good with rooting, the Nook Color is $200 and can be rooted to a full Android tablet.

kind of what i was thinking benny.
i was looking at used i pads for 300++
and im pretty sure the fire will do everything i need/want in a
tablet.
wish it had bluetooth built in, but thats an easy fix with a small transmitter

You sure about that, make sure you research this, from what I've found:

Hello,

Thank you for showing interest in buying the Kindle Fire.

I'm really sorry but we do not have an option to plug in any external keyboard, flash drive or a Bluetooth transmitter at the moment. I understand it can be quite upsetting for you to know this but we have certain limitations.

I'll surely pass on the comments to our Kindle team and we'll definitely work on improving the features of our devices.

However, if you root a Nook, you can activate the bluetooth chip inside of it, plus add the Kindle app to it along with the whole android market if you wanted.

I had a fire. My wife is on her second, after having software issues. We have found that while it does have nice features, it doesn't do a number of things we wanted very well at all. For instance, it has no safegaurds against my 4yr old surfing an internet porn site (I still can't figure out how he did it). There were also no safeguards against my 4yr old buying apps and games that he thought looked fun. He's smart, and figured it out on his own. Also, I could only observe this site, but could not post, since the fire would not highlight the text windows on this site. That was the last straw, so I returned mine within a week for a full refund. Mine also had a defective speaker, which is a widely reported problem. Battery life isn't very good, either.

Since their release Amazon has issued an update which allows you to password protect access to the net, but still no content filtering, or purchase protection (your credit card is stored in your account info, so anyone holding your kindle can spend your money.

I'm waiting untill the next model comes out in the spring with a bigger screen, better battery, and improved software. I'm also open to another brand, if the features are improved.

The wife has one, she likes it.

I had a friend of my company's owner come to me yesterday at work (not that I have actual important stuff to do like rebuilding an entire 300+ user domain from scratch), and wanted to know if I could set his kindle up to work with his phone's hotspot.

The KF does not support ad-hoc wireless mode, which sucks unless you have a phone that supports a soft AP.

Wasted all day researching, rooting, screwing with, etc... if you root the KF, it's not so super user friendly anymore regarding amazon's cloud services and such.

TBH, I'd buy a straight up badass Android tablet, and download the Amazon Kindle app.

We got my mother the kindle for x-mas and she loves it. She's never used a touch screen device before and seems to handle it quite well (after practice and lots of questions). She just didn't play around with it much but now she's got a hold of it and she's on it all the time.

She's done some small amount of reading on it but mostly solitaire and suduko. hah.
