Large Rider Thinking of Buying a Superjet

Hello, Im new to the forum and I am recently getting into riding stand up skis. My brother currently rides a 1994 Kawasaki 750SX and that is what I learned on. I'll tell a short story before I ask my question... I purchased a really nice 1996 Yamaha Wave Raider 760 for dirt cheap here locally. I rode it for a couple years and had a really good time on it. My brother bought his stand up shortly after I got my Yamaha. I tried riding it and failed miserably, really hated it and swore I would not ride a stand up. I couldn't get over it though, I ride motocross, skateboard, ride BMX and I'm in good shape but I couldn't ride this thing. I had to figure it out. After a few trips to the lake and giving it 15 minuets of effort each time I didn't make much progress, then something finally clicked and I started to get the hang of it. As soon as i could ride stably and make turns I knew this was 10x more badass than my sit down. I sold my ski shortly after and now Im getting pretty good at riding my brothers Kawi. I have always been a Yamaha fan and Im thinking of buying a Superjet. Im concerned that Im a pretty big guy and I want to make sure this ski will be good for me. I'm 6'4" and 230 pounds. Does anyone have any recommendations on what ski I should be looking for? Should I be looking for a Kawasaki?

You would be fine on a Superjet. Given your size I would recommend to start with a 701 motor (not a 650). To start with an all stock machine would be ok. As you get more experience you could add performance enhancers like a girdled head, b-pipe, etc. The other thing to consider given your size is that you might also want to invest in a heavy duty pole mount and handle pole.
Great to hear someone ditching their couch for a stand-up!

Thats good to hear! I like the look of the SN and Im very mechanically inclined. Ive built many trucks and motorcycles so I think I will try to find an older ski and build it myself, or attest fins a SN with the 701. Can you point me to information on those engines? I commonly hear 61X and stuff like that, what does that mean? Im new to this but I'm pretty intelligent haha.

There is a nice write up at www.groupk.com/y633-781sj-all.htm that has pretty much all you would need to know, including differences between 61X, 62T, etc.

What kind of riding are you doing? The stock handle pole might be fine for you with just a lowered bracket and a -1.5 turn plate if you are over 6'. I'm 6'3' and that's all I need. If youre riding freestyle yeah you wanna shorten the handle pole but for just ripping around, carving turns or doing some laps around a course, you may not need to shorten it. Getting weight forward and keeping the nose down on a s.j definitely helps especially if it's 96/07 model, but at the same time you do not want to be plowing thru little waves and over working yourself. Rider needs are case by case, and it can take years to get it figured out to how your hull reacts to where you are positioned...

Little things go a long way, a/m bars and grips, good shoes and gloves, some fresh hydro turf with under padding for example. Those things make your riding so much more comfortable when you big/ tall. (I'm 6'3) The s.j tray is gonna feel small for you, that's the only area the sxr800 has a real edge from the comfort standpoint. My frames' not super wide so it feels fine for me. If it's really not to you're liking you can widen the tray, tons of options there for how to cater it to your preference.

Engine wise the Yamaha 701 has a nicer power band for a big rider imo compared to the stock sxr800. The 701 pulls a little more right off the bat than the 800 which is a top end performer.

Superjet RN all the way, enough power to pull you around and then some.
After you get good at it riding it STOCK, start by adding "handling" mods. You will "feel" the change right away and customize the ski for your style of riding. A mere prop change will blow your socks off. Finally, start experimenting with engine mods and add more power.
